CHELSEA BUYALOS BM3
Soprano Chelsea Buyalos from Chester, Virginia has recently joined the Peabody Conservatory as a freshman pursuing a B. M. in Vocal Performance studying under Marianna Busching. At a young age Ms. Buyalos developed an ear for music; which led to the start of her formal training at eleven.
Over the years Ms. Buyalos has had many opportunities to share her music. She recently graduated from Thomas Dale High School: Center for the Visual and Performing Arts, where she was a proud member of Thomas Dale’s Chamber and Madrigal Choirs. Ms. Buyalos was also an active member and participant in many Community Choirs such as "All District Workshop and Mixed Chorus 2002-2007, Virginia All- State Chorus 2003, and Richmond Symphony Side by side Chorus" 2005-2007.
She made her operatic debut in 2005 while in Italy with Operafestival di Roma in their main stage production of Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro. While in Rome Ms. Buyalos also was featured in Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater. Ms. Buyalos also has been involved in other Concert and Oratorio works such as Villa-Lobos’s Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 and Rutter’s Requiem. Along with her classical training she has performed in many musicals such as Annie, The King and I, Guys and Dolls, Oklahoma, and The Boyfriend.
Ms. Buyalos is an honored 2006 NATS (National Association for the Teachers of Singing) competitor, and Bland Music Scholarship recipient. Recently Ms. Buyalos has worked with the Richmond Philharmonic Orchestra on their spring, and summer concert series. Currently Ms. Buyalos will continue to pursue her B.M in Vocal Performance while at the Peabody Conservatory.
MARISA DEL CAMPO BM4 (ALSO WITH BRYN-JULSON)
Mezzo-Soprano, Marisa Del Campo, is currently in her third year at the Peabody Conservatory studying voice with Marianna Busching and Phyllis Bryn-Julson. Marisa has been a driven musician since she first joined the church choir at age 8. Her musical interest grew as she began to study the violin in elementary school. It was after singing a lead role in her first musical, The Wizard of Oz, that she realized her true passion for singing. Since then Marisa has performed in many musicals and dramas including The King and I, Fiddler on the Roof, Carousel, West Side Story, Neil Simon’s California Suite, and Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
In addition to her musical theater experience, Marisa has perfromed several recitals of arias, art songs, and musical theater material, and has also done a number cabaret-style performances with singer, Michael Gray and musical director, John Cook.
In 2006 Marisa was cast in her first opera: the world premier of The Furies at Catholic University. Other opera credits include Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte and Die Zauberflöte where she played the third spirit in Peabody Opera Theater’s production.
Last summer Marisa was found singing at The Amalfi Coast Music Festival in Vietri Sul Mare, Italy where she performed in Die Zauberflöte at the Serici Theater of the Royal Belvedere Palace - San Leucio (Caserta) as well as singing in numerous concerts. Marisa was also asked to sing in a musical review called Showtuners which was performed as a fundraising event for the Center for Aids Research in Manhasset, New York.
This year, she will be playing the role of Denise in Offenbach’s, Marriage by Lanternlight with the Peabody Opera Workshop. When not on a stage Marisa can be found dancing, doing yoga or is in the kitchen baking!
JENNIFER HAMILTON MM2
Mezzo-soprano Jennifer Hamilton is looking forward to her first year at Peabody as she pursues her Masters in Music. She is especially enthusiastic to be a part of Marianna Busching’s studio!
Although Ms. Hamilton has moved all around the United States, she considers herself a true Georgian from the small town of Roswell where her family still resides. In Roswell, Jennifer studied voice with Elise McAlpine O’Banion at the Peggy Still School of Music. During her high school years, she also had the opportunity to be a soloist at the Lincoln Center in New York City with her high school choir, as well as play Marian in the school’s production, The Music Man. Before high school was over, Jennifer participated in the summer program at Boston Conservatory for voice in 2002, as well as the Georgia Governor’s Honor’s Program as a voice major in 2003. Later, she received her Bachelors degree in voice performance at the Florida State University College of Music in August of 2008. There, Jennifer studied under Cecily Nall and Dr. Wanda Brister and participated in several operas such as Falstaff, Susannah, La Bohème, and Don Giovanni as a chorus member. Also, she was chosen to perform scenes in the FSU Opera Scenes Program as Dorabella in Così fan tutte and Katisha in The Mikado. She also had the experience of a lifetime as a participant in Florida State’s Opera Outreach program where she performed in Little Red Riding Hood. This October, Ms. Hamilton will perform the role of Maurya in the one-act opera, Riders to the Sea by Ralph Vaughan Williams with the Peabody Opera Workshop. She is so thrilled to continue her studies at such a prestigious conservatory as Peabody, and is looking forward to her next two years in Baltimore!
ZOE KANTER BM2
Soprano, Zoe Kanter is a native of Baltimore, Maryland. She is currently a first year student at The Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University, studying under Marianna Busching to earn a Bachelors degree in Vocal Performance and Music Education. Prior to coming to Peabody, Ms. Kanter studied under Terry Eberhardt. She went to the Carver Center for the Arts and Technology for high school where she most recently performed as a soloist in her senior voice recital, played Lily in The Secret Garden, and Woman One in Songs for a New World. She has performed as a soloist for Governor O’Malley’s Free Fall Baltimore Benefit (2007), The Cultural Arts Education Benefit for Towson University (2007), and the Education Channel (2008). She is a Maryland Distinguished Scholar finalist and a third place award recipient in the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS).
LAURA KOZNAREK BM4 (ALSO WITH BRYN-JULSON)
Laura is in her third year in the studio of Phyllis Bryn-Julson. Prior to coming to Peabody, she studied with Noriko Paukert. She was a member of the Cleveland Orchestra Children's Chorus for three years (2000-03), and a member of the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Choir for three years (2003-06). She has been a participant in the Northwestern High School Music Institute for the past two summers and studied with Kurt Hansen in this program. Also, Laura was a participant in the Ohio All-State Choir in 2006 and the Ohio University Choir in 2005. She competed in the Ohio Music Education Association and the Classical Singer's competition in New York in 2005 and received the highest marks. Laura has sung many solo performances including three at the Northwestern High School Music Institute and seven in Noriko Paukert's studio. She has participated in multiple a cappella and chamber groups also while enrolled at the Northwestern High School Music Institute.
In Laura’s freshman year at Peabody, she received the role of Grace Ansley from Ward’s Roman Fever in the spring opera scenes. She also was in the spring’s main stage opera Les Contes D’Hoffman by Offenbach, as a chorus member. In the fall of her sophomore year she is singing Le Loup in Milhaud’s Les Malheurs D’Orphee, as well as a chorus role in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas. Last season she was cast once again by the opera department in minor roles and chorus, ending the season in the Undergrad Opera Scenes.
She loves hiking and learning about new cultures. Laura recently visited the Amazon and cannot wait to go back and hike the Inca trail.
DEVIN MERCER MM2
Baltimore-based tenor, Devin Mercer began his classical music studies as an undergraduate at Oakwood University in Huntsville, Alabama, where he received his Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy under the instruction of Dr. Julie Moore-Preston and Dr. Angelique Clay.
During his tenure at Oakwood, Mr. Mercer traveled with, and was a soloist for, the world-renowned Oakwood University Aeolians, under the direction of Dr. Julie Moore-Preston and Dr. Lloyd B. Mallory, Jr. He has traveled and sung across the United States, as well as Bermuda, Poland, where he was able to perform in the annual Wratislavia Cantans International Music Festival in Wroclaw, and a national tour of Spain. He has performed such pieces as Handel’s Messiah, Monostatos in Mozart’s The Magic Flute, and Moses in R. Nathaniel Dett’s oratorio The Ordering of Moses.
Mr. Mercer currently teaches private voice lessons, and attends the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University, where he is pursuing his Master of Music degree under the instruction of Marianna Busching.
AMBER SCHWARZROCK BM4
Soprano, Amber Marie Schwarzrock, was very involved in the vocal arts in high school, receiving many placements in state and national honor choirs. She has lived in Costa Rica, Switzerland, and England for her study of music and languages. Her opera debut was in Geneva, Switzerland as Donna Anna in Don Giovanni. After taking time off to start a family and support her husband through law school, Ms. Schwarzrock has resumed her musical studies. She is pursuing her Bachelor of Music Degree at the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Maryland where she studies with Mariana Busching. She and her husband Kris and son Trysten reside in Baltimore.
MAUREEN SMITH BM2
Maureen Smith is a first year undergraduate vocal performance student of Marianna Busching at the Peabody Conservatory. She began her musical studies with Peabody graduate Christine O'Meally in August of 2002. Since that time, she has participated and placed in almost every musical competition in her hometown of Milwaukee, WI, including receiving honorable mention in the Florentine Opera's High School Master Class competition in spring of this year. Additionally, Maureen has performed with numerous professional theatre companies, including Milwaukee's Off the Wall Theatre and Bucketworks Theatre. An aspiring pedagogue, she has regularly attended and participated in master classes with the National Association of Teachers of Singing since her sophomore year of high school.
