April 2008

Sarah Davis,  soprano, (student of Stanley Cornett),was First Prize Winner in the Barry Alexander International Vocal Competition (December 2007). As part of her award she was featured in a Winners Recital in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in January 2008. In March and April, Sarah won First Place in both the Pennsylvania District and Northeastern Regional sections of the NATS Artist Awards Competition. She competes in June in the Finals at the NATS National Convention in June. Sarah also has qualified for the Semi-Finals of the 's-Hertogenbosch International Vocal Competition in Holland and will compete there in September.

Nimrod Weisbrod, baritone (student of Stanley Cornett), was one of three Winners of the Florida District of the  2008 Metropolitan Opera Auditions, and subseqently won Third Place in the Metropolitan Opera  Southeast Regionals in Atlanta in February. He is finishing his second season as an Apprentice Artist at Orlando Opera where he sang the role of Masetto in Mozart's Don Giovanni and the role of Ping in Puccini's Turandot in April with the company. This summer (2008) Nimrod has been invited to be a Fellowship Artist at the Aspen Festival where he will perform the role of Pandolfe in Massenet's  Cendrillon with James Conlon conducting.

Soprano Pamela Stein, student of Phyllis Bryn-Julson (MM '06), will participate in the "New Music, New Media" program at the Britten-Pears Aldeburgh Music Festival in early May.  In June, she will be an apprentice at the Hot Springs Music Festival in Arkansas singing Eva in Haydn's Creation and covering the solos for Mahler's Fourth Symphony.  In July, Pamela will be at the "Bang on a Can" Summer Music Festival.

March 2008

Alumni Keesun Kwon, Jeffrey Tarr, and Bonnie McNaughton placed in the local NATS Artist Awards Competition.

Mezzo-soprano Patricia Green (AD '94) performed Haddock's Eyes at the University of South Florida.  The work was written and conducted by David Del Tredici.

February 2008


Maija Lisa Currie received an excellent review in the NYTimes on Jan. 22 for her performance with Dicapo Opera Theater in Beauty and the Beast. "Beauty was portrayed by Maija Lisa Currie, an attractive young soprano with a promising voice and copious stage presence." A photo accompanied the review. 

January 2008


Sarah Davis (MM '06), soprano, student of Stanley Cornett, was First Prize Winner in the Barry Alexander International Vocal Competition (Dec. 2007). As part of the prize she will be featured in a Winners Concert in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall on January 27, 2008.

Chris Magiera (MM '07), baritone, student of William Sharp, won the Connecticut District of the Metropolitan Opera Competition and will sing in the regional competition in Boston.  He has also received a Liederkranz Grant.

Nimrod Weisbrod, baritone and student of Stanley Cornett, won the Florida District of the Metropolitan Opera Competition and will sing in the Southest regional competition in Atlanta.

Tom McNichols took first place in the Upper Midwest Region of the Metropolitan Opera Competition.  He will sing in the Semi-finals in New York.

Brittany Robinson (GPD '07), student of Phyllis Bryn-Julson and Steve Rainbolt, sang in the district finals of the Metropolitan Opera Competition in Colorado.


September 2007


Ilah Raleigh (MM '05), after finishing up a program at Orlanda Opera, has changed fach from mezzo to soprano and will be taking some time off to study in the Orlando area to facilitate this vocal change.  She will be using her talents in Italian as a flight attendant on Delta airlines.


Marlissa Hudson Eaton (MM '01) has just finished performing the role of Bess in Porgy and Bess with the Union Avenue Opera in St. Louis. She has also become an adjunct faculty member at Webster University in St. Louis.

Sara Stewart (GPD ’02) won Second Place in the Marie E. Crump Vocal Competition in June.

Keesun Kwon (BM ’01) won the Baltimore Arts and Humanities Individual Artist Award in May.

Sarah Davis (MM ’06) was chosen by composer John Harbison to perform the World Premiere of his "Vocalization" (poem by Walt Whitman), for voice and piano, at the SongFest Summer Program for Singers and Pianists in Malibu, California this last July.

Kevin Courtemanche (BM ’99) sang the role of Radames in Verdi's Aida with Berkeley Opera and received the following review in the San Francisco Chronicle on July 23rd (Joshua Kozman, Chronicle Music Critic):
"The evening's vocal standout was tenor Kevin Courtemanche, whose
performance as Radames, though dramatically rather stiff, boasted ringing
high notes, agile phrasing and an arresting command of vocal color. He
showed no fear in the face of the demanding Act 1 aria, 'Celeste Aida,'
and brought fervor and discipline to his final showdown with Amneris."
