Matt Horwitz-Lee
Violin, String Ensemble Conductor
A teacher at the Peabody Preparatory Department, a conductor of the Peabody String Ensemble, the Upper Level String Orchestra Director at the Bryn Mawr School, as well as a teacher at Loyola College in Baltimore, Mr. Horwitz-Lee comes to us from the Boston area where he co-directed the Strings program in the Westboro Public School system; his experience there as a teacher led several of his pupils to successes at the state-wide level. Mr Horwitz-Lee regularly coaches violin section rehearsals for the Greater Baltimore Youth Symphony Orchestra.
Many of Matthew's students in Baltimore have earned the title of concertmaster for local Howard County orchestras, performed as concertmaster at the Interlochen Summer Festival, served as comcertmaster for many All-State Orchestra festivals, and have been invited to the 2009 National High School Honors Orchestra. His students have won numerous honors including a rare spot at the Labor Day Festival for Strings at Mercer University with Robert McDuffie. His students have won competitions to perform as soloist with orchestra including the Columbia Orchestra, Frederick Symphony Orchestra, Youth Festival Orchestra of JCC, Young Artist Orchestra of Peabody and the Peabody String Ensemble.
An experienced performer, Mr. Horwitz-Lee holds violin performance degrees from Rice University and the University of Maryland, College Park. Influences and teachers include Mimi Zweig, Kathy Winkler, Daniel Heifetz, Arnold Steinhardt, and members of the Guarneri String Quartet. He was a member of Symphony Pro Musica, served as concertmaster of the Vivaldi Festival Orchestra for three years and has performed with the Washington National Opera as Principal violin.
