Graduate Piano

The acceptance rate for graduate applicants in piano is only about 40% of those who complete auditions. Roughly 23% are rejected at pre-screening, and another 14% are rejected after a live audition.

Defining the attributes of an acceptable applicant is very difficult. The level of acceptance is tied to what we expect from our own undergraduates, but that doesn't mean you have to graduate from a conservatory in order to be accepted. A representative list of accepted MM piano applicants showed them coming from large schools like the Universities of Iowa, Southern California, Maryland, Michigan, and Oregon. Smaller schools listed include Concordia, Harvard, Rowen, and Swarthmore. International schools include Seoul National, Soochow, Toho, Victoria, Fu den, and Ewha. This is only a partial list, but these are mostly schools with exceptional music programs. If you are one of the best undergraduate performers at a music conservatory, or an outstanding performer at a more widely focused school, it is reasonable to apply to Peabody.

As implied above, all applicants in piano must submit a pre-screening recording as part of the application process.  Those passing the pre-screening are invited to come to Peabody to audition in person.  All auditions for acceptance to Peabody in piano must be performed on campus.  The audition requirements will show the level of development required.
