Life outside of Peabody

Every time I tell someone I live on the Eastern Shore and commute to Peabody, the response is "what a horrible drive that must be!"  On the contrary!  Each morning I get to cross the Bay Bridge over the Chesapeake Bay and take in the grandeur of creation: the many faces of the water, the wildlife, the sun dancing on the ripples and the entrance to or exit from one of the worlds I enjoy.  Of course, everyone sings a different tune once they've been to my house, surrounded by woods, a five-minute walk to the beach and our sailboat, the peacefulness of the country and a world filled with the sounds of nature.  Living "out here" is oh, so worth it!

My Home on Kent Island

This is a picture taken sometime in the Winter of 2003; now THAT was Winter!

One of the resident (and NOISY) frogs in our backyard Pond

Spring and summer are wonderful out here.  The "peepers" announce the arrival of Spring; our resident Pond Frogs provide us with a veritable "Frog Concerto".  They start their music anytime after sundown...

My Husband, Bill, and I

We were all spruced up on June 27th, 2004, to attend the wedding of our son/stepson Matt Riggs to Kerry Wallace.

My Absolute Favorite Thing: Sailing on the Chesapeake

My choice form of R&R, closely followed by massage, is SAILING.  I Love IT!  There is nothing I find more pleasing, calming and awe-inspiring than this.  I've learned, and continue to learn so much about life from this experience.  Nothing beats a great day of sailing...CARPE DIEM!

Thomas Point Lighthouse, about 5 Nautical miles from our Home

Thomas Point Light is an absolutely beautiful site on the western shore of the Chesapeake.  Now owned by the city of Annapolis, excursions and tours of this historic Lighthouse are planned in the near future.

Our First Sailboat - '22 Catalina "Water Music"

This is at a marina in Rock Hall, MD, one of our first destinations as sailboat owners.

"Water Music" in St. Michael's MD

Ours was always the smallest boat in the Marina, but we could travel anywhere on wind and/or ten dollars worth of gas.  How many boat owners can say THAT?

The  "Loves of Our Lives"

The "Loves of Our Lives" are our grandchildren, Thomas Murphy Riggs and Abigail Wallace Riggs, children of Matt and Kerry Wallace Riggs.  Tommy made his World Premiere on November 11, 2005, weighing in at an impressive 9 lbs, 5.75 oz, 21 inches long.  He is an ever-changing wonder and delight to his nuclear and extended family.  He was joined by
baby sister Abigail on September 8th of 2008. She is a bundle of energy and joy!

Our Menagerie

Believe it or not, a peacock suddenly pranced down the middle of our community's road one day and stayed!   Peter (so named by his "other parents", our next-door neighbors) certainly added an element of exoticism and intrigue to our home.  He got plenty of attention from passersby and, unfortunately, not enough from the two peahens, purchased by our neighbors,  who joined the "zoo".  We were privileged to observe Peter splaying, trying to seduce his love interests and to have them all roost on our chimney and A-frame. Peter was eventually successful with one of 'the girls' and six babies were hatched, only two of which ultimately survived.
Peter unfortunately met a mysterious death in the fall of 2008.  He was sorely missed by us and the whole neighborhood. The rest of the peafowl - mother, aunt and two offspring - now reside on a farm about 25 miles away.
