For Prospective Students

Hello and welcome to the Peabody Saxophone department website. This site is currently under development and I encourage you to return later as it becomes fully realized.

The Peabody saxophone program is geared for those students seeking an intense, performance-driven curriculum in a conservatory setting. My own experience as an active performer has shaped the program. I emphasize solo and chamber ensemble performance. In an average week a saxophone major will have a private lesson, quartet rehearsals, wind ensemble (or orchestra) rehearsals, a weekly repertoire class and perhaps a saxophone ensemble rehearsal. The addition of music theory, ear training, music history, liberal arts classes and, of course, practicing makes for a busy and challenging weekly schedule. For those interested in broadening their course work, you can also take nonmusical courses at the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences of The Johns Hopkins University, which is a short ten minute ride by shuttle bus.

One unique aspect of Peabody is that in addition to working on your development as a musician, we also hold classes that teach the real world skills necessary for a musical career. I know from experience that being a wonderful musician is only the first step to a successful career. I co-teach with Bill Nerenberg a course on the business of music. We cover professional management, self-management, publicity and other topics that give the fresh graduate an idea of how to start their career. Other business courses offered include Orchestral Management and Copyrights and Contracts. These courses give the Peabody graduate an edge in the real world.
