Placement
New students are required to send in their completed registration with specified payment. After the registration is processed, the Preparatory Office will contact the students to set up a placement appointment.
New dance students must attend a placement session prior to registering. This can be done by contacting the dance department at 410-234-4626. If a placement is granted, the dancer must include the dance department placement slip with their registration forms when registering for class.
Location
Students looking to study at one of our branch campuses must attend placement/auditions at the campus where placements are being held, which is usually our Downtown Baltimore campus.
Advanced Preparation
Students who have studied an instrument or discipline before enrolling at the Preparatory should bring their instrument and any music or portfolio they have been working on. In most cases, students should expect to perform at placements. Beginners may be asked to demonstrate their musical potential in some way. At the placement/audition interview students and/or parents discuss the goals of the student, program information, as well as scheduling. It is important that families be prepared to discuss first, second and potentially third and fourth choices of schedule with the faculty in order to complete the placement procedure.
Scheduling
During the placement/audition interview, students are assigned their new teacher and lesson or class time and place. This information may be available during the interview. Otherwise, the teacher will notify students of their placements a day or two after the interview. It is the desire of the Preparatory to accommodate as closely as possible the scheduling needs of the family. On those rare occasions when a student cannot be scheduled, a full refund will be issued. All placements are contingent upon space in classes and studios and the availability of faculty. Prospective students should consult the catalog under their department of interest to determine if an in-person placement/audition is required.
