The seminar consists of two 90-minute demonstration/discussion sessions. In the first session, Building the Foundation, Marcia Dale Weary will share her knowledge gleaned from over 50 years of experience. Her internationally acknowledged and remarkably successful approach to teaching the fundamentals of classical ballet — a fusion of various substantiated schools of training — is her own perfected analysis of how technique should be broken down and progress in ways that have immediate and lasting impact. Since the observation of Ms. Weary’s morning Elementary Ballet class will primarily cover first and second year levels, the session will begin with some questions and discussion of the morning class material before moving ahead to more advanced work. This will help us follow a logical line of technical progression. Ms. Weary’s exceptional CPYB sudents will demonstrate for her.
Observation of the Estelle Dennis Scholarship class for boys will be the centerpiece of the second 90-minute session: Training the Male Student. The boys, 9 to 15 years of age, will be taught by Mr. Berdo. The 32-week boys scholarship program, which started on September 12, 2009 with financial assistance from the Estelle Dennis Trust, takes place at the Peabody Dance studios. It is an exciting, continuing experiment based on several shared beliefs: 1) There are a great many young males out there with the raw ability but still unfulfilled desire to dance; 2) On a national level, dance schools and training centers are experiencing a dramatic shortage of male students, which is not helped when a student finds himself as the only—or one of very few—males in the class; and 3) For those young men who have the talent and drive to move on to the professional field, a strong technical base is an absolute requirement and ballet, the enabler for all theatrical dance forms, offers that foundation.
There will be opportunities for interactive discussions and question/answer periods throughout the three hour seminar period.
