First Year:

Technique:

Requirements will be based on the individual student’s ability and long-term career goals. Emphasis is on sound, intonation, rhythm, style and technique.

Repertoire:

  • Excerpts—selected from the symphonic and operatic repertoire with concentration on those required for professional bass trombone auditions.
  • Solo compositions
    • Bach Selected Arias Cello Suites (2 & 3)
    • Hindemith Drei Liechte Stuecke (cello)
    • Marcello Sonatas for Cello (1-6)
    • McCarty Sonata

Departmental Examination:

Based on the above.

Second Year:

Technique:

Same as stated for first year.

Repertoire:

  • Excerpts—same as stated for first year.
  • Solo compositions
    • Bach Cello Suites (1 & 4)
    • Dafaye Deux Danses
    • Fetter Variations on Palestrina’s “Dona Nobis Pacem”
    • Galliard Sonatas for Bassoon (1-6)
    • Jacob Cameos

Third Year:

    • Culver Suite for Unaccompanied Bass Trombone

    • Tomasi “To Be or Not To Be”
    • Vaughan Williams Tuba Concerto

Departmental Examination:

Undergraduate recital, 50-60 minutes of music.
