First Year:

  • Geminiani The Art of Playing the Violin
  • Scales & arpeggios

Repertoire:

  • One of the Telemann fantasias
  • Early Italian sonata (Fontana, Castello, or similar)
  • Leclair sonata from op. 1
  • Corelli sonata
  • Handel sonata
  • Bach obbligato violin solo from a cantata

Departmental Examination:

Jury based on the above.

Second Year:

Technique:

  • Fiorillo
  • Tartini L’Arte del Arco
  • Scales & arpeggios

Repertoire:

  • One of the Telemann fantasias
  • Corelli La Folia
  • Geminiani sonata
  • Senaillé sonata
  • Bach obbligato violin solo from Matthew Passion or B minor Mass
  • Bach sonata with obbligato harpsichord

Departmental Examination:

Jury based on the above.

Third Year:

Technique:

Kreutzer

Repertoire:

  • Biber sonata & Passacaglia
  • Veracini sonata (from Sonate academiche)
  • Leclair sonata from op. 5
  • Vivaldi Four Seasons
  • Bach solo sonata or partita
  • Schubert sonatina

Performing:

Baroque ensembles, including repertoire with soloistic violin parts such as Brandenburg Concerto IV or V.

Departmental Examination:

Jury or recital based on the above.

Fourth Year:

Technique:

  • Kreutzer
  • Paganini

Repertoire:

  • Bach solo sonata or partita
  • Westhoff solo suite, learned from facsimile part
  • Mozart concerto III, IV, or V
  • 17th-century Italian sonata
  • 18th-century Italian sonata or concerto

Performing:

As in previous year.

Departmental Examination:

50-60 minute recital including an unaccompanied sonata or partita of Bach.
