First Year:
Technique:
Studies for the development of pedal facility and independence of hands and feet.
Repertoire:
- J. S. Bach: At least one major work, in addition to a group of chorale preludes
- One composition from the 19th century
- A contemporary composition
- Selected shorter works
Departmental Examination:
Will include one of the Bach works plus two additional pieces.
Second Year:
Technique:
Studies for the continued development of pedal facility and independence of hands and feet.
Repertoire:
- Bach: Trio Sonata, and additional large chorale preludes.
- Extended pieces by other composers.
- Pre-18th century composers other than Bach and composers of the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries should be represented in the year’s repertoire.
Departmental Examination:
Will include one Bach Trio Sonata, one extended work from memory, and a contemporary piece.
Third Year:
Technique and Repertoire:
- Larger works of Bach
- Other major works, including those of the 20th and 21st centuries
- One 20th century piece
- One self-taught piece
Departmental Examination:
Will include one Prelude and Fugue of Bach, one other major work, and the self-taught piece.
Fourth Year:
Departmental Examination:
An acceptable presentation, of a full recital program, which must include a large work by Bach, a large work by a 19th century composer and at least one composition from the 20th or 21st century. Exceptions to the above requirement may be made with the agreement of the organ faculty.
