Completing Your Humanities Requirement--returning students

    The following information and guidelines apply to most Peabody undergraduates who arrived on campus in 2006, 2007, and 2008.  Students enrolled in the Double Degree, Recording Arts, and Music Education programs should confer with their advisor.  All students should consult the catalog for the year of their arrival for information on your program.

Understand your requirement

    A total of 32 credits is needed to fulfill the requirement.  After completing the Humanities Seminar (5 credits) most students must complete 27 additional credits distributed between these broadly defined study areas:

LL  = Language & Literature                    -- 9 credits
GP = Global Perspectives                         -- 6 credits
HP = Historical/Philosophical Studies        -- 6 credits
HE = Humanities Electives                        -- 6 credits

Here is an  overview of each study area.  Peabody humanities classes each have one or more study area designation.  If you are planning to fulfill the requirement with courses at Homewood, or if you are petitioning to transfer credit for study at other institutions, these study area descriptions will help.

Enrolled students planning to fulfill humanities requirements with summer study on other campuses should confer with the Chair of the Humanities Department for advice.

The grid will help

    The grids posted here will assist you in planning your Humanities studies at Peabody.  Voice students should refer to the grid designed for their program.

You are responsible for completing the requirement

    See the Humanities courses offered at Peabody next semester.  Courses offered by the Humanities Department are assigned 1 or more of the study area designations--but a single course can only fulfill one requirement.

    Elective courses may be selected from any humanities offerings at Peabody or appropriate classes (including math or science) at Homewood.
