Humanities Seminar 4 credits
The Humanities Seminar is offered at Peabody each Fall. It is designed for new undergraduates; some international students enroll in the Seminar during their second year at Peabody. See explanation here about fulfilling this requirement.
Language and Literature (LL) 9 credits (or three courses) (6 credits only for new students entering Fall 2009)
Courses in Language and Literature address linguistic traditions as a force that shapes understanding and cultural identity. Language courses focus on the mechanics of new language acquisition. Other courses address historical or contemporary literary traditions or themes and/or the development of effective writing skills. These courses include those typically associated with the disciplines of English, Romance, Germanic, and other languages, linguistics, comparative literature, film, cinema, or media studies, and rhetoric, composition, and writing. For students entering Peabody in 2008 or earlier, two of these required courses must be fulfilled by one year (2 semesters) of foreign language study.
Global Perspectives (GP) 6 credits (or two courses)
Courses in Global Perspectives address non-Western cultures, as well as contemporary themes and issues with universal influences. These courses include those typically associated with the disciplines of anthropology, ethnomusicology, sociology, economics, political science, and multicultural studies.
Historical/Philosophical Studies (HP) 6 credits (or two courses)
Courses in Historical/Philosophical Studies address historical inquiry and the world of ideas through the broad span of the Western past. These courses include those typically associated with the disciplines of history, art history, cultural studies, classics, archaeology, religion, and philosophy. Interdisciplinary study is especially encouraged in fulfillment of this requirement.
Humanities Electives (HE) 6 credits (or two courses)
Courses within any of the above study areas qualify as Humanities electives. Math and science courses, as well as additional foreign language study, may be taken as Humanities electives. Studio and other arts classes in fields other than music may also be taken in completion of this requirement. With prior approval, some discussion-based musicology courses qualify as a "humanities-approved" elective.
Voice majors have a different distribution scheme: 1 course (3 credits) in Language and Literature; 1 course (3 credits) in Global Perspectives; 1 course (3 credits) in Historical/Philosophical Studies; 2 courses (6 credits) in German; 2 courses (6 credits) in French; and 2 courses (6 credits) in Italian.
