Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I know which class to register myself or my child for?

A: You or your child needs to take a placement class BEFORE you register.  This must be scheduled through the dance office prior to the time of the class.  Calling the office (410- 659-8100, ext. 1125) or emailing us at dance@peabody.jhu.edu  is the best way to inform us of your interest and to schedule a placement.

Q: Can I choose which class I want my child or myself to take?

A: The purpose of a placement class is for our faculty to evaluate age, dance experience, and physical ability in order to determine which class and level is the best fit for you or your child.  Convenience has to take second place.

Q: How and where do I register after my placement?

A: After you have attended a scheduled placement class you will receive a half a slip of paper confirming you are cleared to register.  You have 3 options for registration:

1. Register in person at our downtown offices

Preparatory Office 2nd floor, 21 East Mount Vernon Place, Baltimore, MD 21202

Office Hours: Monday-Friday 9:00 am – 5:00 pm & Saturdays from 9:00 am – 4:30 pm

2. Register online at www.peabody.jhu.edu/199

3.  Register by fax at 410-659-8182

PLEASE NOTE: Without the half a slip of paper confirming you have had a placement you will not be able to officially register.

Q: How many students are typically enrolled in a class?

A: Generally speaking, class size decreases as the levels advance; i.e. the largest classes are the Young Children’s classes and the smallest classes are levels such as 5/5X/6.  Please note that our faculty work very hard to place students quickly in the best possible learning environment.

Q: Where can I get the appropriate dancewear to meet your dress code?

A: Artistic Costumes located in the Loch Raven Plaza has everything you will need to meet our dress code.  They can be reached at (410) 321-1121. You may also find dance attire online at http://www.dancedistributors.com/.  For a copy of our dress code please visit, www.peabody.jhu.edu/2024

Q: Is there a discount on tuition for JHU students, or can a class credit be obtained?

A: No, there is no discount on tuition for students and classes held in the Peabody Dance Department are not for credit.   However, full time Johns Hopkins students may be eligible to get their registration fee wavered by writing a letter to the Dean prior to registration.  For more information please contact the Prep office at extension 1130.

Q: I am an employee of the University, can I get tuition remission and if so how do I get it applied to my registration?

A:  Johns Hopkins University full time employees and their families are eligible for tuition remission credit.  The amount of tuition remission credit is dependent on the policies of the division in which University employees work and the type of instruction desired at the Preparatory and is calculated on total tuition due.  You must obtain the tuition remission form from you department head and have it filled out and with you at the time of your registration.
