JOB DESCRIPTIONS
Academic Affairs
Student must be available to work Monday through Friday, 9:00a.m. - 5:00p.m. Federal Workstudy Students preferred. Duties include copying, filing, bulk mailings, telephone reception, and running errands on campus. Responsibilities include management of student recital grading process; other duties as assigned. Must be familiar with MS Office 2000, especially Word and Excel. Applicants must have good communication skills, attention to detail, and excellent telephone manners. Confidentiality is an absolute must.
Admissions
We’re a great office to work in and we need students to provide basic information about the “process” of applying and auditioning at the Conservatory. Other “exciting” tasks include envelope stuffing, Xeroxing, giving campus tours, answering telephones, filing papers, data-entry, and assisting during audition weeks. Admissions needs students with some time available between 10:00a.m. - 3:30 p.m. with a special emphasis on lunch hours 11:30a.m.-1:30p.m. If you are interested in working for our office and have work study money in your financial aid package, please stop by our office with: 1)a written copy of your class/lessons schedule with your telephone number and 2)the work study form you should have received from our Human Resources Office at registration.
Archives
Intern ‑ Varied responsibilities, including working with special collections (manuscripts,
photographs, historical records), assisting with exhibitions (assisting with exhibit text, matting and framing etc.), responding to requests for information, and assisting researchers. Qualifications: good writing skills, careful work habits, flexibility and a sense of humor, good computer skills (familiarity with digital imaging a plus), ability to work with minimal supervision. Flexible hours (8‑10 hours per week).
Communications Department
This position requires the candidate to have strong verbal and written communication skills and be comfortable with various desktop applications such as MS Word and Excel. Duties include assisting in concert and event promotion, maintaining office databases, filing, and distributing publications throughout the campus and Mount Vernon community, as well as other clerical duties as required.
Concert Office
1. Box Office
Box Office Assistants: Basic computer and typing skills, customer service experience preferred, ticket office experience a plus. General office duties include ticket sales through our computerized ticketing system, cash/check/credit card transactions, answering phones, and customer mailings. Must be available to work some evenings and weekends in addition to daytime shifts - Monday-Friday assigned in coordination with your class schedule.
Ushers: customer service experience preferred, ushering experience a plus. General duties include greeting patrons and answering questions, handing out programs, collecting tickets, and assisting patrons to their seats. Must be available to work evenings and weekends.
House managers: Ushering experience preferred, management experience a plus. General duties include supervising ushering staff, assigning ushers to concert duties, and e-mailing concert report to Box Office Coordinator after each performance.
2. Concert Office
Concert Office Assistants- Knowledge of Macintosh applications preferred: Microsoft word, PageMaker a plus. General office duties include answering phones, filing, communicating with students & faculty, typing recital programs.
Computer Music
To assist in the maintenance of the computer studios. Responsibilities include maintenance of computer and studio equipment.
Development /Alumni Office
This position provides an interesting variety of projects which include assisting with meeting and event preparation, updating reports, and general clerical duties (must be familiar with WordPerfect 8 for Windows. It is essential that applicants be reliable, detail oriented and have good phone skills. We need two students for approximately 10 hours per week each, but your schedule can be flexible within 3-hour increments. Environment is energetic, interacting with many departments, and will give you a strong overview of the school. Federal Workstudy Students only.
Elderhostel
Interact with Elderhostel guests, making them feel welcome during their week-long stay at Peabody. Duties include assisting guests with luggage, escorting them to recitals, handling check-in and check-out, answering a variety of inquiries. Telephone coverage and light clerical duties also required. Applicants should be fluent in the English language, responsible and outgoing.
Ensemble Office
1. Bowers- must be very detail oriented. Bowers work out of their own space and on their own schedule, occasional extremely tight deadlines need to be met. String players preferred.
2. Office/Clerical- Two students with good written and verbal English communication skills. Must be rapid and accurate typist and comfortable working with computers. Must be detail oriented. 8 to 10 hours per week. Please submit letter or resume to Linda Goodwin.
3. Stage Crew- needed for entire school year. Stage or technical theatrical experience a plus. Flexible schedules a must and ability to work independently. Some heavy lifting may be required. Clerical/computer position also available. (Contact Darryl Carr, ext. 1223)
4. Opera Stage Crew -Daily/Weekly assignments available, plus concerts etc. (Contact Doug Nelson)
Faculty Office
Duties include preparation of incoming work, running high-speed copier, answering phones, sorting and distributing mail, and other duties as needed.
Skills/Qualifications: Good English communication skills, careful and efficient work habits, attention to detail, and good interpersonal skills are essential. Hours are flexible, but on a regular basis. Work Study or ISEP considered. Submit class/lesson schedule with completed application.
Friedheim Library
1. Library Assistant- Assists library patrons at circulation and AV desks and perform other duties as assigned. Duties include checking in and checking out library books, scores, and audio-visual materials using online circulation system, shelving, processing books, scores and audio visual materials. Skills/Qualifications: careful and efficient work habits, attention to detail, good interpersonal skills, good English communication skills (telephone, desk work are essential), computer experience, foreign languages (German, French, and/or Italian preferred) Hours: 8-10 hours per week (including evenings and weekends) Our student staffing needs to be completed by the start of classes. Applicants should contact the library as soon as possible.
2. Interlibrary Loan Assistant- to assist with the processing of Interlibrary loan borrowing/lending requests. Duties include searching statewide as well as national databases (RLIN, OCLC.) Requesting and updating requests on OCLC, filling incoming requests, packing and sending materials, keeping track of requests/loans on a local database (Access). Desired skills: thoroughness, persistence--willing to try to locate material by various means, familiarity with one or more foreign languages, typing. Additional skills: previous experience with OCLC and Access. Hours per week: 10
3. Cataloging Assistant: Assist the cataloger. Duties vary but may include filing materials, typing call number labels, barcoding cataloged items, and helping to catalog the library’s uncataloged materials. Desired skills: reliability, attention to detail, typing ability, and familiarity with computers. Prior cataloging experience is helpful, but not essential. Hours per week: 5
George Peabody Library
The George Peabody Library, located in the Peabody Institute, is part of the Special Collections Department of the Johns Hopkins University. The Peabody Library’s historic collection consists mainly of books from the nineteenth century, but also includes volumes stretching back to the Renaissance. The beautiful historic building which houses the collection opened in 1878. The library is open Tuesday-Friday 9-5 and Saturday 9-1. Description: Student Assistants will help monitor the reading room, register readers, retrieve and re-shelve books, process photocopy and digital camera orders, contribute to on-going projects, and other general duties as assigned. The position requires excellent public service skills and punctuality.
Mail Services
Postal Sorter. Sort and forward student mail. Assist in the data entry of the student mailbox directory. Approximately 12 hours per week, Monday through Saturday. Work study student preferred, but ISEP will be considered.
Network Services
Computing Center - Lab Operations Assistant - Duties include providing maintenance and assistance to Unger Lounge and Leakin Hall Computing Centers. Lab Assistants play an integral role in Peabody I.T.’s services by staffing the Computing Center and maintaining optimal working conditions. Desire a working knowledge of the Macintosh, and DOS/Windows operating systems and software applications. Previous customer service experience, including exemplary interpersonal communication skills. Previously demonstrated abilities in maintaining a professional attitude at all times. Previous lab assistance, consultant, and/or instructional experience helpful, but not required. Requires superior customer service attitude, strong organizational and interpersonal skills, professional point of view and demeanor, excellent written and verbal communication skills, proactive customer service attitude. Federal Workstudy student preferred.

Placement Office
Assist with preparation of Job Vacancy Bulletin published twice a month, summarize and write up information from employers, competitions, and summer festivals. Miscellaneous tasks such as filing and preparing mailings. Assist with organizing Thursday noon and other concerts. Computer and writing skills needed.
Registrar’s Office
Duties include filing, answering phones, typing letters and envelopes, processing transcript requests, assisting students at the counter, and other clerical duties. Computer and writing skills needed.
Security
Student Security Patrol. Patrolling the campus, checking identifications, locking and unlocking doors as dispatched, patrolling and monitoring practice rooms and performance halls, writing reports and maintaining good community relations. Operating small van (must complete driving test).
Student Affairs
Clerical positions. 5-15 hours/week, 8:30-5:00 Monday through Friday. Responsibilities include (but are not limited to) the following: Bulletin board maintenance, Peabody Rag production, answering phones, taking messages and forwarding calls (knowledge of Conservatory operations very helpful), locker rental transactions, errands on and around campus. Other duties as assigned. The prospective employee should have good communication skills and phone manners, the ability to handle confidential information in a highly confidential manner, and be reliable. Knowledge of Adobe PageMaker and HTML skills a plus, but not necessary. Work study students preferred.
