STUDENTS INTERESTED IN PRIVATE VOICE LESSONS MUST SCHEDULE A PLACEMENT AUDITION BY CALLING 410-659-8100. After the placement audition, students will either be placed with a private teacher (depending on availability of the faculty) or recommended for a group voice class. Registering online for private voice lessons alone without going through placement auditions will not guarantee you a spot. To register, visit: 199
Young singers ages 13 and older may audition for private voice lessons. Students will participate in a departmental repertoire class and recital each semester. Students may also audition for voice certificates, Signature Recitals, Voice Honors, and view or participate in annual Master Classes with special guest teachers.
Since the voice matures slowly and most of the classical music repertoire is in foreign languages, voice students should be able to read music already, and be prepared to learn and memorize quickly.
Younger children and teens without any previous musical training are recommended to build musical and language skills in preparation for individual voice lessons by
-
singing in an ensemble for children such as the Peabody Children's Chorus;
-
taking small group classes such as Basics of Singing;
-
taking private lessons on an instrument such as piano, violin or flute;
-
participating in theory or keyboard classes.
