Young Children’s Program (Ages 3-6)

Six weeks (June 21 – July 30), Downtown Baltimore & Towson campuses

All new students entering the Young Children’s Program must take a placement class to determine their readiness for formal instruction. Please contact Peabody Dance at 410-659-8100 ext. 1125, or dance@peabody.jhu.edu to schedule a class.

Creative Dance

Choose 1 to 3 classes weekly, which focus on movement/locomotion skills and rhythmic awareness as a careful transition to more formal dance training.

Introduction to Ballet (Ages 5-6)

Choose 1 to 4 classes weekly. Approaches the basic fundamentals of ballet (placement, port de bras, footwork and simple vocabulary) while still broadening movement skills and rhythmic awareness.

Dance and Music (Ages 5-6)

Classes, offered twice weekly, begin with Introduction to Ballet, and add one hour of Music for Young Singers and Movers (see the Early Childhood Music Program section for a detailed description of the “Music for Young Singers and Movers” class content).

Pre-Professional Intensive (Ages 7-young adult)

Four weeks (June 23 – July 18; no classes on Friday, July 4)
Monday-Friday, 9:00 am-4:00 pm (Downtown)

A challenging full-day program for highly motivated, entry-level to upper-level students provides a strong focus on ballet, pointe (for upper level students who demonstrate technical readiness) and additional work in Contemporary Dance, Other Dance Forms, Percussion, and Theater Arts.

Students with previous dance training must complete a placement session to determine which level is appropriate. Please contact Peabody Dance at 410-659-8100 ext. 1125, or dance@peabody.jhu.edu to schedule a placement session. Beginners with no formal training will enter Level A and do not need to be placed.

Level A: Primary, ages 7-13, beginners and students with one year or less of formal ballet training.
Level B: Elementary, ages 9 and up with at least two years of formal ballet training.
Level C: Intermediate, ages 10 and up with at least three years of formal ballet training.
Level D: Upper Intermediate/Advanced, ages 11 and up with at least four years of formal ballet training.

All students accepted into the Pre-Professional Intensive Program are strongly encouraged to enroll for the full four weeks, for which a beneficial tuition discount is offered. However, if this is not possible, students may enroll for four weeks or a three-week minimum.

 

Summer Program (Two weeks—August 4–15)

Course 1: Technique Intensive

Open to serious and committed intermediate and advanced level ballet students ages 11 and up, and advanced contemporary dance students with substantial ballet training, Course 1 consists of a concentrated three-hour daily schedule beginning with a technique class, and followed by classes in pointe, variations, and Pilates.

Course 2: Dance Theater Workshop

Open to all students participating in the morning Technique Intensive and, in addition, upper level contemporary dance students ages 13 and up with substantial ballet training. This course schedule includes the morning Technique Intensive above and the afternoon session which includes classes in Contemporary Dance, Improvisation, Composition, Music for Dancers and a Dance Theater project.

Evening Classes for Teens and Adults

Six weeks (June 18 – July 28), Downtown (unless otherwise noted)

Graded classes are offered for beginners and more practiced students who love to dance and seek enrichment and physical fitness.

Students with previous dance training must complete a placement session to determine which class level is appropriate. Adults with no formal training will enter the Beginners or Fundamentals class and do not need to be placed.
