Disability Services

Peabody students with disabilities are entitled to reasonable accommodations to help ensure their success.  Disability Services at the Peabody Conservatory is coordinated through the Office of Academic Affairs.

Following the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, the term disability means, with respect to an individual: 1) a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of the major life activities of such individual; 2) a record of such an impairment;  or 3)  being regarded as having such an impairment.  An accommodation is "an appropriate adjustment or modification of  examinations, training materials or policies, the provision of qualified readers or interpreters, and other similar accommodations for individuals with disabilities."

To receive accommodations, students must:

  1. Gather the required documentation;

  2. Download and complete the request form; and

  3. Submit the request form and required documentation to the Office of Academic Affairs.

Once Academic Affairs has the required materials, they will be submitted to the Director of ADA Compliance and Disability Services for the Johns Hopkins University.  When the University's Director makes a determination about accommodations, the Peabody Office of Academic Affairs will arrange an appointment with the student about implementing the accommodations.

Documentation

The guidelines about documentation of a disability have been established by the Johns Hopkins University Office of Institutional Equity, and are as follows:

  • Documentation must come from a qualified professional with relevant expertise in the disability in question. It must be signed by the diagnostician and printed on official letterhead.
  • Documentation must describe the current functional limitations resulting from a disability, and should include any relevant evaluations or diagnostic test scores.
  • Documentation must include a summary of the history of the disability.
  • Documentation should include a list of suggested accommodations that will address the functional limitations of the disability.
  • Documentation must refer to a recent diagnostic test or medical review, based on the type of disability.
More specific information can be found in the document below, which was created by JHU Disability Services, or by visiting the website of the Office of ADA Compliance and Disability Services.
