AP & Transfer Credits (effective Fall '09)

Students can accelerate their path through Peabody's academic requirements via testing that demonstrates competency and achievement and by transferring coursework completed at other institutions.

  • Peabody Testing -- Superior achievement on placement tests administered on campus during Orientation can allow students to place into more advanced courses in foreign languages.

  • Transfer Credits -- Classes completed at other schools with a grade of C or better can allow students to obtain credit for required course work in Humanities. AP and IB course work demonstrated by superior scores on the standardized tests can allow students to obtain credit for required course work in Humanities (and for required general electives).

Placement tests are administered during Orientation.

Credit for AP or IB work, as well as transfer credits for coursework completed elsewhere, are reviewed on a case by case basis.  This process begins with a petition to the Office of Academic Affairs.  Students are responsible for submitting their petition.

HOW TO PETITION FOR TRANSFER CREDITS

Most determinations about transfer credits will be made at the outset of Fall semester.  Appropriate documentation is necessary for transfer decisions can be made.  If you believe you have transferable courses or appropriate test scores that qualify for credit, you may petition the Office of Academic Affairs, providing clear explanation of the credit you seek to obtain and your justification for seeking this credit. You must also assemble the required documentation to present to the Office of Academic Affairs.

AP and IB Course Work

Peabody can award credit for superior scores on the standardized tests that record AP and IB achievement.  You must earn either a 4 or a 5 on the Advanced Placement Examinations administered by the College Board, or a 6 or a 7 on the International Baccalaureate Exam.

Peabody can allow credit for up to two Humanities classes (6 credits) on the basis of these tests.  (Some courses may not be a suitable substitute for Humanities classes, but may be still be applied as a general elective, which is required for some degree programs.)

Coursework from Other Institutions

Peabody can award credit for courses completed with a C or better from any accredited college or university.  (College coursework accepted for high school credit cannot transfer.)

For Peabody to record prior work in either case, we must have the appropriate documentation on file.  Most students submit standardized test scores when applying to Peabody.  It is your responsibility to provide an updated record of your test scores--documentation should be sent directly to the Peabody Registrar.  Similarly, an updated transcript is necessary to review courses from other institutions.

The Office of Academic Affairs, in consultation with the Humanities Department Chair, will review each petition and will make final determinations on a case-by-case basis.
