Completing Your Humanities Requirement

Students in different undergraduate programs at Peabody fulfill different Humanities requirements.  Make sure that you follow information for your program!

All Peabody undergraduates are encouraged to fulfill their humanities requirements with courses offered on the Homewood campus (the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences at The Johns Hopkins University).  Advanced Placement and transfer determinations are made by the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in consultation with the Humanities Department faculty. See Sources of Credit in the Academic Regulations section of the catalog.

Humanities

During the first year of study, the Humanities Seminar helps new undergraduates transition into academic study at Peabody; in subsequent semesters, students complete their humanities requirements by selecting courses in consultation with their advisors and the Humanities faculty. Many of the Humanities courses are interdisciplinary and demand creative thought within the context of disciplined study. Writing and class participation is emphasized.

Foreign Languages

Classes in French, German, and Italian are offered on the Peabody campus; other languages are offered on the Homewood campus. While only voice students are required to take foreign language in fulfillment of their degree requirements, all students are strongly encouraged to take foreign language as a Humanities elective.  Examinations for advanced placement in these languages are given during Orientation Week. Voice students may test out of required foreign languages and have the credits waived. Other students may be placed in the second year of a foreign language, but the Conservatory will not waive Humanities credits for students who are not voice majors on the basis of placement exams.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

Peabody offers intensive English as a Second Language (ESL) courses for students whose English language skills are not at college level. All incoming international students will be tested and interviewed to determine their level of English proficiency during Orientation Week. Students placed in ESL courses must successfully complete these courses in order to fulfill the requirements for the Bachelor of Music degree program. Some Peabody courses require ESL courses as a prerequisite. The ESL requirement may extend the length of a student's program. Intensive English study over the summer months is strongly recommended for ESL students.
