Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Chair in Piano
Studied with Artur Schnabel. First American winner of a major international competition (Queen Elisabeth of Belgium, 1952). Debut with New York Philharmonic and Pierre Monteux at age 16. Soloist with many international orchestras and festivals throughout the U.S., Europe, Asia and South America. Recording artist for Columbia, Sony Classical, and Philips "Great Pianists of the 20th Century." Former music director, Annapolis Symphony Orchestra. Co-artistic director, Theatre Chamber Players of the Kennedy Center. Artistic director, Tanglewood Music Center, 1985-97. Member of the Academy of Arts and Sciences. First living pianist to be inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame.
