Academic Affairs Office

Leakin Hall, Second Floor
410-234-4622

The Office of Academic Affairs serves the academic and musical mission of the Peabody Institute by administering the curricula of the Conservatory's degree programs. Academic Affairs regulates academic requirements, performance requirements, and the integrity of curricular offerings. Moreover, the office monitors student progress through their degrees.

The academic program coordinator facilitates the associate dean's work and oversees most of the routine duties of the office, providing academic support, coordinating tutoring, and keeping essential records for the faculty's standing curricular committees. The Office of Academic Affairs also collaborates with the Student Affairs Office to provide academic advising for first year students and sophomores. Academic Affairs, through its regular work with departments and standing committees of the Faculty Assembly, also coordinates advising for juniors, seniors, and graduate students.

Tutoring

Peer Tutors

Peabody provides tutoring for undergraduate students who are experiencing difficulty in an academic course. The tutoring program is managed through the Office of Academic Affairs. A student seeking tutoring completes a tutor request form, from the Academic Program Coordinator in the Office of Academic Affairs, which must be signed by the teacher of the subject for which the student is seeking assistance. The teacher determines the amount of tutoring time needed (a maximum of three hours per week for a specified and limited number of weeks). The student then returns the request form to the academic program coordinator and is assigned a tutor.

A student who wishes to be employed as a peer tutor must be recommended by a faculty member in the appropriate area of academic study. The student fills out a peer tutor recommendation form, complete with the recommending teacher's signature, and returns it along with the necessary employment forms to the academic program coordinator.

Writing Tutors

Peabody also offers writing help by trained student tutors through the Writing Assistance Program. Undergraduate and graduate students may work with writing tutors on papers, program notes, and application letters. Writing help is available on a walk-in basis every Sunday and Wednesday evening between 7:00 pm and 9:00 pm on the second floor of the Friedheim Library. Students can arrange a private tutorial session by contacting a writing tutor and setting up an appointment. A list of writing tutors is maintained in the Office of Academic Affairs and by Dr. Ron Levy, faculty member in the Humanities Department. A student who wishes to be employed as a writing tutor should consult with Dr. Levy.
