Chamber Music
Leakin Hall, Room 302
The musical, technical, and communicative skills developed by active chamber music participation are critical to every student's artistic growth. Students are encouraged to form their own groups with each other. Those without pre-formed groups will be placed into groups. As many interested students as possible will be placed, although priority will be given to students who have not yet fulfilled their chamber music requirements.
Every group is expected to rehearse several times each week. When forming groups, the chamber music faculty will seriously consider large ensemble assignments and class schedules to ensure the availability of ample rehearsal time.
Every attempt will be made to honor students' group requests, provided the proposed members' levels of experience, ability, and schedules match favorably. If a group has a request for a particular coach, they may indicate this on the pre-formed group form that will be filled out at the beginning of each semester. In most cases these requests can be honored. All requests for pre-formed groups and coaches must be made through the office of the director of chamber music. This system exists to ensure the best possible organization of the chamber music program and to give students the best opportunities to work with various coaches, as well as participate in Chamber Music Department master classes and special concerts.
Chamber music groups have various opportunities to perform at Peabody, most commonly in one of the several chamber music concerts that take place each semester and in the weekly Thursday Noon recital series. Deserving groups will also be chosen for special performing opportunities at Peabody and in the community. Chamber music master classes by Peabody faculty and guest artists will occur periodically each semester.
In addition to regular participation in the Chamber Music Program, Chamber Music elective courses are available to interested students. The Chamber Music Seminar focuses on a specific part of the repertoire and supplements regular coachings with weekly meetings of all the participants. The Seminar will consist of four to five groups, chosen at the discretion of the Chamber Music faculty. The Instrumental Chamber Music Class is also a forum to study chamber works and sonatas in a class setting. In Vocal Chamber Music, the great works for chamber ensemble and voice are explored. New Chamber Music pairs instrumentalists and composers, who work together to create a new work of chamber music and to study techniques for performing contemporary music.
Chamber Music information and department forms can be found on the bulletin board outside Michael Kannen's studio, room 302 Leakin Hall.
