A.B., Ph.D. (historical musicology), Columbia University. Studied piano with Isabelle Vengerova, composition with Karl Weigl, chamber music with Adolf Busch and Rudolf Serkin. Former faculty, Columbia University. Recitals and appearances with orchestras throughout Europe and the United States. Books: Letters of Composers Through Six Centuries (1967), Music in the Western World: A History in Documents (1984, with R. Taruskin; 2nd edition, 2007), Opera: A History in Documents (2002). Articles in all the leading U.S. musicological journals, papers at numerous international congresses in the U.S. and Europe. Contributor to The New Grove, Rossini Critical Edition, etc.
