Welcome to the Archives!
The institutional records of the Peabody Institute, maintained by the Peabody Archives, chronicle not only Peabody's history, but the cultural development of Baltimore and Maryland from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. These records reflect the original divisions of the Institute and include the records of the Peabody Lecture Series, the Peabody Gallery of Art, the Peabody Library and the Conservatory of Music with its adjunct Preparatory Department. The records also include an extensive Archive of recorded Peabody performances—including visiting artists, faculty and student recitals—and a large photographic collection.
The Archives also maintains the records of many of the performing arts institutions in the Baltimore area, among them the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Baltimore Civic Opera, the Harford Opera Company and the Lyric Theater. The Archives' special collections includes the personal papers of the Institute's trustees, faculty and staff as well as noted musicians and artists.
The Archives is open to scholarly researchers and to the general public. Persons wishing to use archival materials are requested to contact the Archivist by phone or letter prior to their visit to discuss the nature of their research and to arrange for an appointment.
Please feel free to browse our website. We are continuing to update and expand the Archives' online contents, so do check back often.
