January-February Media Calendar Updated 11/9/09
Chamber, Vocal, and Orchestral Music: Quartet for the End of Time, A Visit with Emily, Made in AmericaFor the first Peabody concert of 2010, faculty artist Anthony McGill, principal clarinet of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and a performer at President Obama’s inauguration, will join the Peabody Trio, the Conservatory’s ensemble-in-residence, on Wednesday, Jan. 27, to play Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time. Also on the program for this Sylvia Adalman Artist Recital Series concert will be Mendelssohn’s Trio in D minor. The next two concerts in the Adalman Series are on Tuesday, Feb. 2, when pianist Leon Fleisher – a faculty artist since 1959 – and his colleagues Pamela Frank, Michael Kannen, Maria Lambros, and Violaine Melançon will perform Brahms’s Piano Quintet in F minor, plus chamber works by Beethoven and Webern; and Tuesday, Feb. 23, when members of Peabody’s Voice Department will present Tom Cipullo’s song cycle A Visit with Emily and music of Purcell, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Brahms, Saint-Saens, and Gubaidulina. Hajime Teri Murai will conduct three concerts by the Peabody Symphony and Concert Orchestras in January and February, each demonstrating the approach that has repeatedly won these ensembles ASCAP Adventurous Programming Awards. On Saturday, Feb. 6, the Peabody Symphony Orchestra will present Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 in G major, Pulitzer Prize-winner Joseph Schwantner’s Chasing Light... (part of Ford Made in America, made possible by Ford Motor Company Fund), and Homage by Joshua William Mills, the winning work in the Macht Orchestral Composition Competition at Peabody. On Friday, Feb. 12, the Peabody Concert Orchestra will present Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Berlioz’s Le corsaire, and Joan Tower’s Made in America (commissioned in the first round of the Ford program). The Peabody Symphony Orchestra returns on Saturday, Feb. 27, to play Mozart’s Symphony No. 33 in B-flat major and Bartok’s Concerto for Orchestra. |

September 21st, 2009Competition Winners to Perform with Peabody Symphony
Two winners of Peabody Conservatory competitions, both seniors, will perform concertos this fall with the Peabody Symphony Orchestra conducted by Hajime Teri Murai. On Saturday, Sept. 26, Ronaldo Rolim will play Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 4 in G minor, Op. 40, and on Saturday, Oct. 24, Hans Goldstein will play Dvořák’s Cello Concerto in B minor, Op. 104.

New Book on Conducting by Peabody's Gustav Meier
Gustav Meier, director of the Peabody Conservatory’s graduate conducting program, will sign copies of his new book, The Score, the Orchestra, and the Conductor, on Monday, Sept. 21, at 7:00 pm, in Peabody’s Arthur Friedheim Library.

Pasternack to Open Peabody's Season, Sept. 23
Pianist Benjamin Pasternack, a Peabody faculty member since 1997, will present the first concert in the Peabody Institute’s 2009-2010 season on Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 8:00 pm in Peabody’s Miriam A. Friedberg Hall.

Benefit Recital for Flute Master Classes at Peabody, June 4
Peabody faculty artist Marina Piccinini, one of the world’s leading flute virtuosos, will give a benefit recital on Thursday, June 4, at 7:30 pm in Peabody’s Leith Symington Griswold Hall, 17 East Mount Vernon Place, Baltimore. Proceeds will benefit the scholarship fund for the 2009 Marina Piccinini International Flute Master Classes at the Peabody Conservatory of The Johns Hopkins University.

Kennedy Center President to Receive George Peabody Medal
Michael M. Kaiser, President of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, is the 2009 recipient of the George Peabody Medal for Outstanding Contributions to Music in America. The medal will be presented on May 21 in Baltimore at the Peabody Institute’s graduation ceremony.

Peabody Concert Orchestra to End Season with Mozart, Mendelssohn, May 1
The Peabody Singers and the Peabody-Hopkins Chorus will join the Peabody Concert Orchestra to present Mozart’s Mass in C minor, “The Great,” on Friday, May 1, at 8:00 pm. Also on the program for this end-of-season concert is Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 5 in D major, “Reformation.” 2009 is the bicentennial of Mendelssohn’s birth. Associate Conductor and Choral Director Edward Polochick will conduct.

Winner of Marbury Violin Prize to Give Recital, Apr. 21
Violinist Colin Sorgi, a senior at the Peabody Conservatory, will give the 2009 William Marbury Prize Competition Recital on Tuesday, April 21, at 7:30 pm in Peabody’s Hilda and Douglas Goodwin Recital Hall.

Renaissance Ensemble Goes "PG13" For Wide Open Weekend
The Peabody Renaissance Ensemble will present a program of bawdy ballads, lascivious lutesongs, mischievous madrigals, and dizzying dances during Mount Vernon Wide Open Weekend (WOW!), April 24–26. Both performances of “Gather Ye Rosebuds,” one on Friday and one on Saturday, will be at 7:30 pm in the Peabody Institute’s Leith Symington Griswold Hall. Other Peabody events during Mount Vernon WOW! include performances by Peabody Chamber Opera, Peabody Improvisation and Multimedia Ensemble, and the Peabody Percussion Group.
