# 18576: Forefathers of The Blues; Art Deco; The Jazz Singers
Program

Forefathers of The Blues

featuring Seth Kibel

Examine the music and careers of guitarists/singers Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters--towering giants of American folk music. Although one was acoustic and one was electric, one was rural and the other urban, they defined the sound of modern blues.

Art Deco

featuring Ernest Liotti

Often described as the period of art deco or the jazz age, this streamlined modern trend inspired artists to explore new expression. Learn about the art deco influence on American industrial designers Russel Wright, Gilbert Rohde, and Donald Deskey.

Program Note: Instructor, Ernest Liotti is a major collector of American industrial design of the 1930s, predominantly the works of Gilbert Rohde for the Herman Miller Company. Pieces of his collection are featured in a recent book on the designer by historian Phyllis Ross published by Yale Press.  Enjoy a glimpse of his collection as part of Art Deco Week. We will walk to his home, which is four blocks away, and will encounter slightly hilly and uneven city sidewalks.

The Jazz Singers

featuring Andy Fields

Examine "jazz" vocal techniques such as blues, swing and scat through lectures, discussions, audio, and video recordings. Explore jazz greats such as Louis Armstrong, Connie Boswell, Bing Crosby, Billie Holiday, Cab Calloway, and others.
