Submitting Your Revised Essay -- Ron Levy's classes
A rewrite should not be a casual effort. A serious rewrite involves serious engagement with your ideas--comments you received on your work should lead you to this kind of engagement. A rewrite should take your writing to a higher plateau. That's the point!
Consider working with a Writing Consultant--his or her feedback will be very helpful.
Rewrites are encouraged this semester--a rewrite of the first essay is built into the scheme of the assignment. My comments on your work are written with your rewrite efforts in mind. Rewrites should be substantial efforts.
Rewrites should be submitted in hard copy, in packets that include the following:
- TWO PRINTOUTS: a) A printout of what I returned to you -- your original paper with my comments, and; b) your final (revised) draft--clearly indicated as such. (Write "FINAL DRAFT" or something similar on this version.)
- A SCHEME OF HANDWRITTEN NOTES on both of the above that shows your changes. On the original, these can be notes written for you as you considered possibilities for revision; on your final version, these should be notes written for me that explain your changes and decisions. SEE THIS PAGE FOR FURTHER EXPLANATION AND ILLUSTRATION. (This means that your final draft will not look neat and tidy . . . to the contrary, it will be covered with handwritten notes!)
- A "REVISION GUIDE" walking me through the process of revision. The "Revision Guide" is not just a few lines, but a thoughtful explanation--click on the link to read about it.
If changes in revision lead to an essay that has expanded beyond the word limit stipulated in the original assignment, that's alright--as long as your rewrite is decidedly better than the orginal, in the ways that my comments direct you.
