Five Saturdays: 3:00-5:30 p.m. in Room C308 (Conservatory Building)

3:00–4:15 pm Master Class

4:15–5:30 pm Teacher Workshop

This series is open to studio and public school teachers, conductors and pedagogy students. All classes will be offered over five Saturdays throughout the fall/spring semesters at the Preparatory’s main campus (downtown) of the Peabody Institute. A Teacher Workshop will follow each Master Class. Performers are Peabody Preparatory students.

Each year, a different set of topics is explored in the series of master classes. This season, we will focus on creative practice techniques for varied levels of young musicians and on select traditional études. In the Creative Practice sessions, we will explore numerous ways of making études out of the music, as well as games, charts, logs, layered practice, and the transition to holistic, independent practice at the upper levels. Each student will perform a piece as well as an étude that supports the skills required in the music. In the Wohlfahrt and Kreutzer sessions, students will perform études and will explore sequential ways to practice them. Please bring your instruments and music for the following (Please email PrepStrings@lists.johnshpkins.edu a week prior to classes I, III and V if you would like to know the exact repertoire being performed.):

Class I Creative Practice – Elementary Level
Class II Wohlfahrt Études, Op. 45, Bk. 1
Class III Creative Practice – Intermediate Level
Class IV Kreutzer Études #2–12
Class V Creative Practice – Advanced Level

In working with each performer, the instructor will offer specific, practical advice that will assist participants in helping students improve their technical and musical skills as they practice at home, and will highlight concepts that can be applied by listeners and observers in their own practicing and teaching.
