Diversity at Peabody
The Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University values diversity and inclusion. We are committed to a climate of mutual respect and civility among members of our community. Peabody recognizes that disability is an aspect of diversity. Our goal is to create learning environments that are usable, equitable, inclusive and welcoming.
President Daniels’ recent message to the entire Johns Hopkins University community offers a good opportunity to review initiatives at Peabody recently undertaken in the critical area of diversity.
Over the last year, members of search committees at Peabody, both for faculty and administrative positions have undergone “unconscious bias” training through resources provided by the University. We are continuing that process this year, and also have added an additional component, by appointing a diversity advocate as part of any search committee going forward. The Peabody Diversity Pathway Task Force, established in January 2016, is charged with examining Peabody’s current state of diversity and establishing a long-term plan which addresses the diversity pipeline for students, faculty, and staff, fostering an ongoing conversation about the culture of diversity at Peabody and in the world of classical music. Sub-committees have been established in three areas of focus: Pipeline and Student Recruitment; Curriculum & Programming; and Climate/Inclusion & Cultural Competency.
The Johns Hopkins University launched Faculty Diversity Initiative (FDI) in November 2015 to locate, attract, and retain the best and most talented faculty, representing a broad diversity of backgrounds, thought, and experiences.
Rheda Becker and Bob Meyerhoff have made a generous gift of $500,000 to the Peabody Institute supporting initiatives to build diversity in the Institute’s student body, faculty, and staff. Their gift allows the Institute to work on this important issue in a variety of ways, all focused on reaching underrepresented populations and talent regardless of socio-economic level and opportunity.
Johns Hopkins is a community committed to sharing values of diversity and inclusion in order to achieve and sustain excellence. We firmly believe that we can best promote excellence by recruiting and retaining a diverse group of students, faculty and staff and by creating a climate of respect that is supportive of their success. The Diversity Leadership Council provides resources for all Johns Hopkins faculty, staff, and students.
The Student Activities Office supports and sponsors a variety of activities in cooperation with student groups which foster awareness, inclusion, and active discussion.
In the Fall 2016 issue of the Peabody Magazine a feature story discussed new initiatives aiming to expand the pipeline to the podium for more women and people of color.
Peabody Preparatory alumnus and founder and president of the Sphinx Organization, Aaron Dworkin was featured on WYPR’s Midday Segment with Tom Hall and Kathleen Cahill on Oct. 10. Mr. Dworkin discussed steps major national orchestras and other art institutions must take to ensure racial diversity, equity, and inclusion. Mr. Dwokin also lead a talk at the Dean’s Symposium on Oct. 10, discussing the “standard of excellence” in classical music, and how we must interpret this “excellence” to include the diversity of our full community.

One pathway to Peabody starts with mentoring new music teachers in the Baltimore City Schools. These teachers identify the most talented and motivated students and recommend them for Peabody’s Tuned-In program, where they receive free lessons, classes and ensemble activities.
The Tuned-In program offers full Peabody Preparatory scholarships to musically talented Baltimore City youth. In addition to weekly private lessons with Preparatory faculty, Tuned-In participants have the opportunity to work with accompanists and to attend concerts and other cultural events around Baltimore.
The Peabody Preparatory is excited to accept a $34,000 award from the National Endowment for the Arts for the 2016-2017 school year. The Art Works Award supports the creation of work and presentation of both new and existing work, lifelong learning in the arts, and public engagement with the arts through 13 arts disciplines or fields. The award will help to support the Tuned-In program, which offers full Peabody Preparatory scholarships to musically talented Baltimore City youth.
Over the past year, there has been so much public attention focused on the unmet needs and lack of options for Baltimore's youth, and rightly so. It's a huge and critical challenge. The simple fact is that the systemic issues that have marginalized so many of our city's young people require many different kinds of solutions. As our city and community look to find and craft those solutions, the impact of music programs demonstrates the difference that music and the arts can make in the lives of young people. Read more...
Junior Bach is an outreach program sponsored by the composition department at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University. Each semester, Peabody composition majors give weekly, one-on-one lessons to students from the St. Ignatius Loyola Academy, culminating in a concert of their original music. Founded in 2006 by then-undergraduate composer Kevin Clark on a volunteer basis, Junior Bach has been offered for academic credit since 2007, providing invaluable teaching experience for composers at Peabody and a unique creative opportunity for students at St. Ignatius.
