International Students

How to Apply for a Social Security Number

International students employed by Peabody offices must apply for a U.S. Social Security number before they begin to work if they do not have a current number. The 822 number assigned by the University to your ISIS account is not a legal number for employment purposes.

To apply:

  1. Get a letter of employment from your hiring department
  2. Get a 2nd letter of employment eligibility from Danielle Tillile, International Student Affairs
  3. Complete Application Form
  4. Take letters, application, passport, and I-20 to Social Security Office at:
1010 Park Avenue, Suite 200 (behind Meyerhoff Symphony Hall)
    Baltimore, MD 21201
    1-800-772-1213
Office Hours: Monday–Friday 9:00 am–4:00 pm (except Federal holidays)

When you apply for the SSN, you will receive a receipt of application. Please bring this receipt to the HR/Payroll Services Office. You will usually receive your Social Security card within 2 weeks. When you receive the card, please bring to HR/Payroll Services so that your University records can be updated.

Foreign National Information Form

All newly-hired international students must complete the FNIF form.

Please complete the form, print, and bring to the HR/Payroll Services Office with your passport and I-20. If you have any problem completing the form, HR/Payroll Office is available to help you.

University Payroll Paperwork

Payroll forms required of all newly-hired student employees can be picked up from the HR/Payroll Services Office, Monday–Friday, 8:30 am–4:30 pm.
