Dean of the Preparatory

Carolee StewartCarolee Stewart has served as dean of the Peabody Institute's Preparatory Division since 2001, where she is responsible for all fiscal and curricular aspects of Peabody's pre-college and adult studies programs. Prior to becoming dean, she was a faculty member in the Peabody Conservatory's Music Education department from 1991 to 2001, teaching music methods, vocal methods, elementary and secondary general and graduate courses.

Dr. Stewart received her B.A. in music education from Westfield State College, her M.M. in music education from the New England Conservatory of Music, and her Ph.D. in music education from the University of Michigan. For 14 years prior to her studies at Michigan, she taught chorus and general music in the middle and high schools of Freetown and Lakeville, Mass. Dr. Stewart is a specialist in Orff Schulwerk, the teaching approach developed by composer Carl Orff that integrates singing, playing, speech, and movement. She holds Orff Schulwerk certification from the New England Conservatory and the Orff Institute (a department of the University Mozarteum) in Salzburg, Austria, where she has also taught. Dr. Stewart has held various titles with the American Orff-Schulwerk Association, including president, and since 1994 has served as the acting general editor of the American Edition Orff-Schulwerk Music for Children. A recorder player and vocalist, she has performed with various music ensembles in New England, the Middle Atlantic states, Michigan, and Austria.

Dr. Stewart has been honored internationally with several awards and scholarships, including a grant from the Carl Orff Foundation and a dissertation fellowship from the University of Michigan.
