Audition Repertoire Guidelines

The following repertoire listings are to be considered guidelines. You must be prepared to perform either the listed music or something your teacher considers to be equally advanced.

Bassoon
  1. Two contrasting etudes from Weissenborn, Milde or similar study books

  2. Two contrasting movements from a Baroque or classical sonata or concerto

Cello

Cellists must submit a pre-screening CD containing 10-15 minutes of music from the audition repertoire.  The pre-screening CD must be sent along with the application by December 1.

  1. The first movement of a concerto from standard literature

  2. Two contrasting movements from any Bach suite or Baroque sonata

  3. One etude from one of the following: Duport 21 Etudes, Popper High School of Cello Playing, Piatti 12 Caprices

Clarinet
  1. Mozart Concerto in A, K. 622 (slow movement)

  2. One of the following:

    • Weber Concerto No 1 in F Minor (1st or 3rd movement)

    • Weber Concerto No. 2 in Eb (1st or 3rd movement)

    • Mozart Concerto in A. K. 622 (1st or 3rd movement)

    • Weber Concertino, Op 26

    • May include any standard repertoire piece which best represents their performance level and technical proficiency

     

Composition

Composition majors must qualify in the music theory placement test at least for Theory I, and must demonstrate some keyboard proficiency.

Several compositions for various media which demonstrate the applicant's musical and creative development must be submitted with the application for admission. These compositions will be pre-screened in December. Applicants passing the pre-screening will be evaluated during our February audition period.

Double Bass
  1. Contrasting movements of a concerto or sonata

  2. Two excerpts from the standard orchestra audition literature

Early Music

Euphonium
  1. Rochut Melodious etudes, Book 1, Etude #2

  2. Orchestral excerpts: Holst - The Planets

  3. Wind ensemble excerpts:

    • Holst - Second Suite in F, March (mvt. 1)
    • Shostakovich - Festive Overture

     

  4. A solo chosen by the applicant

Flute

Two copies of a pre-screening CD recording must be included with your application.  Repertoire for the pre-screening CD is below.  It is the same as for regular auditions.

  1. A complete Sonata by J.S. Bach OR a complete Concerto by W.A. Mozart (including cadenzas)

  2. A solo work (unaccompanied) of the candidate's choice

  3. A third, contrasting work of the candidate's choice (this can be a Sonata, a work for flute and piano, a concerto or an unaccompanied work)

Applicants are urged to perform repertoire which best represents their performance level and musical taste.

French Horn
  1. Kopprasch Sixty Selected Studies Vol 1, No 15

  2. Two solos of contrasting styles

  3. An orchestral excerpt comparable to the solo in Strauss Till Eulenspiegel or Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5
     

Guitar
  1. Major and minor scales and basic arpeggios

  2. Perform from memory 3 compositions in contrasting styles.

Harp

Perform from memory 3 works from standard solo repertory representing different historical periods and demonstrating an understanding of different musical styles.

Jazz
Note: Jazz auditions are not available at regional audition sites.

Applicants to Peabody’s undergraduate program in Jazz Studies must successfully complete a performance audition on their applied instrument and an entrance examination to assess proficiency in theory and aural skills.

Oboe
  1. A fast and slow Ferling etude, or the equivalent

  2. One technical solo from the standard orchestral repertoire, and one slow solo from a Bach Cantata

  3. Any work from the standard solo literature

Organ

Applicants may be expected to perform a composition selected by the examination committee at sight.  Applicants must be prepared to perform on the organ:

  1. A work by J. S. Bach

  2. A solo work from the Romantic period

  3. A solo work written after 1910

  4. A hymn at sight

Percussion
  1. Know proper usage of instruments as bass drum, cymbals, triangle, tambourine, castanets, etc.

  2. Snare Drum - Cirone Portraits in Rhythm, Etude No 13 and Prokofiev Peter and the Wolf, Rehearsal 49 - end of 50

  3. Marimba - Bach Violin Concerto in a minor (Goldenberg Method)

  4. Xylophone - Gershwin Porgy and Bess Overture, Kabalevsky Colas Breugnon, Shostakovich Polka from the Golden Age

  5. Timpani (demonstrate a fluent tuning control of the timpani) - Goodman Ballad for the Dance, Beethoven Symphony No 5, Fourth movement, measures 374-395

Piano

Undergraduate piano applications must submit a pre-screening CD along with their applications by December 1.  The CD must include:

  • A sonata-allegro movement from a classical sonata

  • a major romantic work

  • one virtuosic etude

Applicants passing the pre-screening will be required to perform at Peabody in person for admission.  Here is the required repertoire:

  1. BAROQUE - A Prelude and Fugue or any other work containing a fugue by J.S. Bach.

  2. CLASSICAL - Complete (All-Movements) sonata by Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven or Schubert. The Mozart G Major Sonata, K. 283, and Beethoven Sonata, Op. 49 may not be used to fulfill this requirement.

  3. ROMANTIC - A major solo work by a 19th-century composer. For example - Chopin: Ballades, Scherzi, or Sonata; Brahms: Op. 118 or 119 (complete); Liszt: Dante Sonata, Vallee d'Obermann or a Hungarian Rhapsody. Note: A Chopin Nocturne or Etude may not be used to fulfill this requirement.

  4. 20TH CENTURY - A major solo work.

  5. ETUDE - A virtuoso Etude by one of the following composers: Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Scriabin, Debussy, Bartok, or Stravinsky.

  6. TRANSFER STUDENTS ONLY: Must present one additional virtuosic etude from Chopin, Liszt, Debussy, or Rachmaninoff.

Saxophone

Applicants should prepare two etudes of contrasting styles, two contrasting movements from a major sonata, and (optional) one movement of a standard concerto. As examples:

  1. Ferling: 48 Etudes and Mule: 18 Exercises after Berbibuier

  2. Creston Sonata, Eccles/Rascher Sonata, Heiden Sonata

  3. Glazounov Concerto, Ibert Concertino da Camera

Trombone

The applicant should prepare music of contrasting styles that best exhibits his or her abilities. The music may be drawn from solo repertoire, etudes, orchestral excerpts, etc..  Scales may be requested.

  • A Bordogni/Rochut etude of applicant’s choice, down one octave (not etude #1).

  • A non-legato, articulated etude from one of the following books:

     

    1. Tyrell Advanced Studies for BBb Bass

    2. Blazevich 70 Studies for BBb Bass (Books I or II)

    3. Blume/Fink 36 Studies for F-Attachment

    4. Gillis 20 Etudes for Bass Trombone

Orchestral excerpts (many parts may be ordered from Kalmus, 800-434-6340; others can be found in excerpt books or copied from a score)

 Choose one from the following:

    1. Haydn The Creation

    2. Mozart Kyrie from The Requiem (version where bass trombone doubles chorus parts)

Choose one from the following:

  1. Wagner Ride of the Walkyries (minor and major)

  2. Berlioz Hungarian March

Choose one from the following:

    1. Schumann Symphony #3 The Rhenish

    2. Brahms Symphony #1

    3. Brahms Symphony #4

Choose one from the following:

    1. Strauss Ein Heldenleben

    2. Wagner Das Rheingold

Choose one from the following:

  1. Franck Symphony in d Minor

  2. Kodaly Hary Janos

Major scales in eighth notes, quarter note=60, legato and articulated, in Ab, Bb, C, D and F (three octaves where possible).

Trumpet
  • Two solo movements of contrasting styles from the major Concerto and Sonata repertoire. (Haydn, Hummel, Hindemith, Kennan, etc.)

  • One etude from the Bousquet “36 Celebrated Studies” (ed. by E. F Goldman and published by Fischer.) OR

  • Any etude of comparable difficulty from another etude book.

  • Two excerpts from the standard orchestral audition repertoire.

  • Scales in all keys; possible sight reading and transposition.

Tuba
  1. Rochut Melodious Etudes Book 1 No 2

  2. An orchestral excerpt from Wagner Overture to Die Meistersinger

  3. A solo

Viola
  1. Two contrasting movements of unaccompanied Bach, or one unaccompanied work

  2. One movement from a standard sonata, e.g., Brahms, Schubert, Schumann, Shostakovich or a comparable work

  3. One movement from the Bartok, Walton, or Hindemith concertos or a virtuoso movement from a standard classical concerto

Violin
  1. Concerto from standard repertoire - 1st movement (with cadenza if applicable), or 2nd plus 3rd movement.

  2. Unaccompanied Bach - Two contrasting movement from an unaccompanied Sonata or Partita.

  3. One concert etude from one of the following: Kreutzer, Rode, Dont, Gavinie, Paganini

Voice

For undergraduate applicants intending to audition in person at Peabody, a pre-screening CD recording with three selections must be submitted along with the application. Repertoire should follow the guidelines below.

Three classical selections are required, at least one in English and one in a foreign language. Selections must be memorized, and should show a variety of styles and tempi.
