October 16, 2012, Baltimore, MD: A mixed program of music and contemporary dance created for the Sculpture Court of the Walters Art Museum will take place on Sunday, Oct. 21, at 1:00 and 3:00 pm. Peabody Dance Artistic Director Carol Bartlett is co-creator of the event with Conservatory faculty members Alison Wells, who teaches cello, and Serape Bastepe-Gray, who coaches guitar ensembles.
The 11 dancers, who will perform four dances choreographed by Bartlett, are students in Peabody’s pre-professional dance training program. The musicians, who will perform works from a variety of European periods, contemporary South American music, and an original composition by Bastepe-Gray based on traditional African music, are Conservatory students in the cello, guitar, and wind departments.
Titled “Crossing Time and Distance,” the collaboration is an example of Peabody Dance reaching beyond its walls in anticipation of its centennial celebration in 2014.
“The Walters’ Sculpture Court is a very special space, both visually and acoustically, in which to perform live music and dance,” said Bartlett. “These new works, associated with a range of time periods and geographic regions, will present stark contrasts in style and content.”
