Organ, Opera, and the Baltimore Premiere of Defiant Requiem
March will come in like a pipe organ at Peabody, with a Mar. 3 performance by Judith Hancock, longtime associate organist of New York's Saint Thomas Church, Fifth Avenue. The program will include works by Mendelssohn, Respighi, and her late husband, Gerre Hancock, who was her faculty colleague at the University of Texas at Austin. The other Sunday concert on Peabody's 3,000-pipe Holtkamp organ this spring will take place on Apr. 14, when faculty artist John Walker presents "Souvenirs de Paris" to mark the 850th Anniversary of the Cathedral of Notre Dame. Organ fans should also plan to attend one of the four performances of Camille Saint-Saëns' Symphony No. 3, "Organ," by Peabody alumnus Felix Hell with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Mar. 14-17.
The Peabody Opera Theatre's spring production will be Lakmé, a work by Léo Delibes set in British India. First performed in Paris in 1883, Lakmé is best known for its Act I Flower Duet (Sous le dôme épais) and Act 2 Bell Song (L'Air des clochettes). Directing the production is Andrew Chown, with Hajime Teri Murai conducting the Peabody Concert Orchestra.
Defiant Requiem: Verdi at Terezín, a concert-drama created by Peabody alumnus Murry Sidlin that has been presented three times at Terezín, the former Nazi concentration camp known as Teresienstadt, will be performed at Peabody on Apr. 23 (Baltimore premiere) and Apr. 24. Commemorating performances of the Verdi Requiem by Jewish prisoners, Defiant Requiem tells a tragic but uplifting story of art in the midst of degradation. Live narration and film clips are added to a complete performance of the Verdi work, in this case by the Peabody Symphony Orchestra, the Peabody-Hopkins Chorus, and the Peabody Singers, conducted by Sidlin with faculty artist Herbert Greenberg as guest concertmaster.
