Flower Mart, Computer Music, and Angels and Devils
Along with the last concerts of the season by Conservatory jazz ensembles, Preparatory orchestras, and the Peabody Children's Chorus, the months of May and June will offer several one-of-a-kind events. Both the Peabody Institute and the architecturally stunning George Peabody Library will be open to the public on Friday, May 3, and Saturday, May 4, for Flower Mart, Baltimore's annual spring festival. Free student recitals, family activities, and mini-tours will take place both days. A few days later, on Tuesday, May 7, Peabody's Computer Music Department, one of the oldest at a major conservatory, will present a free concert of new works by student composers. Performers on acoustic instruments will share the stage and hall with laptops, microphones, speakers, and mixers at this cutting-edge showcase.
The Preparatory's Spring Dance Performances, on Sunday, May 19, will feature scenes from Sleeping Beauty. As usual, student dancers from the tiniest to the most advanced will perform. The following month, on Sunday, June 23, the 2013 Marina Piccinini International Flute Master Classes will open with a gala recital by the acclaimed soloist, a Conservatory faculty artist. A highlight of this year's recital will be a performance of Henry Brant's Angels and Devils, a 1932 work for flute ensemble, by Piccinini and her students.
