Cello Requirements
First Year
- 10 minutes of music taken from repertoire covered during the year representing at least two contrasting styles.
- One standard orchestral excerpt from recommended list.
- One standard etude.
- One major and one minor scale.
Second Year
- Two contrasting movements from an unaccompanied suite or sonata, memorized.
- One substantial movement from a concerto from memory or two contrasting movements from the sonata literature.
- Two contrasting standard orchestral excerpts from recommended list.
- One standard etude.
- No repetitions from previous jury.
Third Year
- A complete unaccompanied suite or sonata, memorized.
- A complete concerto from memory or a complete sonata.
- Three contrasting standard orchestral excerpts from recommended list.
- A public performance prior to jury of requirements 1 and 2 (in a Peabody recital hall for Elder Hostel or in an outside venue).
- No repetitions from previous jury.
Fourth Year
- A recital of 50-60 minutes in length - repertoire determined by teacher and student.
- At least four contrasting standard orchestral excerpts from recommended list, played at final jury.
- A short piece or movement of a larger piece written after 1950.
- No repetitions from previous jury.
