Harp Requirements
All departmental examinations will be 15 minutes in length. Graduate students who do not present a recital during the current academic year will have a 20 minute jury. Exceptions, substitutions, etc. will require advance consent of the harp department faculty.
Policy for degree Recitals
- Undergraduate recitals will be 50-60 minutes playing time. Graduate recitals will be 50-60 minutes playing time. AD recitals will be 60 minutes playing time.
- All solo repertoire must be memorized.
- Chamber works whose harp parts are substantial may be included but are limited to two per recital. (Exception: AD students may present one full chamber recital if desired.)
- At least three representative styles must be included:
- Baroque or Classical
- Romantic or Early 20th century
- Contemporary (Exception: AD students may present one "period" recital if desired).
First Year
Technique
Material selected in accordance with the student's technical needs and rate of development.
Repertoire
Representative works of at least two style periods; selected orchestral excerpts.
Departmental Examination
Based on the above material. At least one work must be memorized.
Second Year
Technique
Material selected for continued development according to individual needs.
Repertoire
Representative works of at least three style periods (two of these must be major works); selected orchestral excerpts including two cadenzas.
Departmental Examination
Based on the above material. At least two works must be memorized.
Third Year
Technique
Material selected from concert etudes or technical repertoire.
Repertoire
Representative major works of at least three style periods (one of these should be a concerto); selected orchestral excerpts including cadenzas.
Departmental Examination
Based on the above material. All solo works must be memorized. An acceptable half-recital or chamber recital, including solos as above, may reduce jury requirement.
Fourth Year
Departmental Examination
- An acceptable presentation, from memory, of a full recital program which must include large works from at least three style periods, a concerto, and a major chamber work (music may be used for the chamber work).
- Fifteen minute jury covering selected orchestral excerpts.
Graduate Students
Departmental Examination
- Representative major works of at least three style periods. All solo works must be memorized.
- A jury of 20 minutes covering selected orchestral excerpts.
