Trombone Requirements
All departmental hearings will be fifteen minutes in length. If the entire department faculty is present at the senior recital, the senior jury may be waived.
Policy for all degree recitals at all levels:
- All recital programs must be approved by the major teacher and the department coordinator. If a student of the coordinator, the student must have recital program approved by an additional faculty member.
- Recital Outline
- undergraduate recital: 50-60 minutes of music; graduate recital: 50-60 minutes of music
- more than 2/3 of the recital must be performed by the original instrumental combination of the composer (non-transcription); a concerto with piano accompaniment is acceptable.
- the program must include at least one major sonata or concerto
- the following musical periods must be covered:
- either Baroque or Classical
- Romantic
- 20th century
- Contemporary: two 20th century works or two contemporary works may be performed in lieu of one of each.
- chamber music is optional, but if used, it may fulfill any of the above musical period requirements.
First Year
Technique
Emphasis is on the basics in playing: breathing, sound (tone), intonation, rhythm, style and musicality. Legato, clef reading, and tonguing are emphasized secondarily. Use of scales and etudes on a level to be determined by the teacher after evaluation of each individual student's needs.
Repertoire
Solos and excerpts on a level to be determined by the teacher after evaluation of each individual student's needs.

Second Year
Technique
Same as stated for first year.

Third Year

Recitals
Participation in student recitals upon recommendation of the teacher is mandatory.

Undergraduate recital, 50-60 minutes of music.
Note: The instructor should be contacted for a listing of the complete course of study for all four years. This will include technique methods and solo repertoire used on a level determined by the instructor after evaluation of each individual student's needs.
