Voice Requirements
All undergraduate voice majors are required to attend a minimum of eight voice recitals, two master classes, two opera performances and two choral concerts at Peabody during the academic year. The students sign in with the major teacher or Grad Assistants. Failure to meet this requirement will result in lowering the final lesson grade in May by one third.
First Year
Technique
Material is selected in accordance with the student's technical needs and rate of development.
Repertoire
- Works are selected in accordance with the student's technical needs and musical rate of development.
- Four solo works. Selections must be from song literature and can include operatic or oratorio arias. Music may be used for the oratorio arias.
- One foreign language (preferably Italian) should be represented.
Departmental Examination
- Based on the material covered during the year.
- Four solo pieces including Italian from memory.
Second Year
Technique
A continuation of the work covered in the first year.
Repertoire
- Six solo works.
- Selections must be from song literature and can include operatic or oratorio arias.
- Two foreign languages must be represented.
Departmental Examination
- Will include six solos from memory. One must be an operatic, oratorio, or cantata aria. Music may be used for oratorio arias.
- Two foreign languages must be represented.
Third Year
Technique
A continuation of the work covered in the second year.
Repertoire
- A continuation of the second-year course of study covering various style periods and three foreign languages.
- Eight solo works.
Departmental Examination
- Will include eight solos performed from memory.
- Selections from the song literature but must also include an operatic, oratorio or cantata aria. Music may be used for the oratorio and cantata aria.
- Four languages—Italian, French, German, and English—must be represented.
Fourth Year
Technique
A continuation of the work covered in the third year.
Repertoire
- A continuation of the study of all styles and media developed during the previous years.
- Three foreign languages must be studied.
Departmental Examination
Recital from memory, 45 minutes (performing time). The repertoire must include three foreign languages plus English. The recital must be comprised of song repertoire, but may include some arias and chamber music. Use of music must be approved by the primary faculty in consultation with the Chair of the department. While some repertoire may be repeated from prior years, the majority must be newly learned in the past year.
MM:
Departmental Jury:
- Ten pieces including an operatic, oratorio, or cantata aria.
- Four languages represented, including English.
- Recital, 50-55 minutes (playing time).
DMA, Artist Diploma & Graduate Performance Diploma:
Departmental Hearing:
- Ten pieces including an opera or oratorio aria.
- Four languages represented, including English.
- The first recital for GPD students must be completed by the end of the first semester of the second year.
