Trumpet at Peabody

Trumpet

The Peabody Trumpet Studio is a groundbreaking one-of-a-kind trumpet studio that prepares students for the demands and reality of today's music world. The trumpet studio is led by Joe Burgstaller (soloist, formerly Canadian Brass), Edward Hoffman (formerly Baltimore, North Carolina and Phoenix Symphonies) and David Fedderly (Tubist with Baltimore Symphony; known as this generation's Arnold Jacobs).

Each student receives 14 lessons per semester, with the breakdown being: 9 lessons with Burgstaller, 3 lessons with Hoffman, 2 lessons with Fedderly.

Mr. Burgstaller's teaching emphasizes creativity, connection, versatility and entrepreneurship, and he combines the best of traditional techniques with an innovative mental training approach that has its roots in the field's modern breakthrough discoveries of the last two decades.

Additionally, Mr. Burgstaller leads the brass chamber music program, in which the groups function as individual entrepreneurships, learning presentation skills that have resulted in former groups presenting at Chamber Music America straight out of school. Mr. Burgstaller also leads a special 8-part series of masterclasses called "Change Your Mind, Change Your Playing™"

The reality of today’s evolving music world demands a versatile well-rounded trumpet performer who is able to play in a multitude of styles and situations with equal skill and musicianship. Today’s professional trumpeter must be able not only to perform at a high level but also to jump from genre to genre, situation to situation… often all within the same performance!

Musicians entering the modern workplace must have entrepreneurial and teaching skills and experience in addition to traditional performing skills. Young professionals are entering a new and rapidly changing music marketplace, and need the right background, experience and preparation to give them the best chance for success.

The opportunities afforded to trumpet students at The Peabody Institute directly address the needs and realities of the modern music business. It is a new and exciting period in the history of the music world, and we here at Peabody are excited to be a dynamic force in the future of music!
