David HardyB.M., Peabody Conservatory. Studied with Laurence Lesser, Stephen Kates and Mstislav Rostropovich. Principal cello, National Symphony Orchestra since 1994; associate principal cello from 1981 to 1994. Founding member, Opus 3 Trio, ensemble in residence at Washington Conservatory of Music. Cellist, 20th Century Consort, with whom he has premiered works by Stephen Albert, Nicholas Maw, and Joseph Schwantner. Solo recitals at the Library of Congress, Wolf Trap Center for the Performing Arts, National Gallery of Art, and the Phillips Collection. Top American prize winner, 1982 Tchaikovsky Cello Competition; certificate, 1979 Geneva International Cello Competition. Debuted with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra at age 16.
