Singing in German
Wolfgang Justen earned his BA and MA from Portland State University, and his PhD from Rice University. An accomplished guitar soloist and accompanist, Dr. Justen has performed around the country and internationally. He is a member of several chamber music groups in Germany, Austria, and the United States, and is co-founder of the Houston Classical Society, where he served as president from 1970 to 1988. He was coordinator of German Diction Studies at the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria for 20 years, and has also served on the faculty at Rice University and the University of St. Thomas
Dr. Justen has been a member of the Peabody Institute’s faculty since 1991. He began as a German teacher and coordinator of language studies until 1996, when he became associate dean for Academic Affairs. He served as Dean of the Conservatory from 2002 until 2008
Dr. Justen has been honored for his work as both teacher and student, with awards and scholarships including the NDEA Teaching Fellowship from Rice University and the Constantine Foundation Grant for Postgraduate Research.
