Theory 1 - Diatonic Voice Leading

This course includes study of voice leading, melody, figured bass, and diatonic harmony, through analysis and composition.

By the end of Theory 1, the student will be able to:

1) Harmonize a diatonic melody using 4-part SATB style, with correct voice leading and idiomatic functional harmony;

2) Realize a diatonic bass (figured or unfigured) and/or Roman numeral chord progression with correct voice leading; and

3) Analyze (and also may compose) diatonic compositions.

Theory 3 - Baroque Counterpoint

This course is a study of music of the Baroque era including invention and fugue, through analysis and model composition.

By the end of the Theory 3, the student will be able to

1) Analyze music in genres typical of the Baroque era, with special attention to the contrapuntal works and style of J.S. Bach;

2) Utilize idiomatic harmony and counterpoint to write model composition assignments in typical Baroque genres, including invention and fugue; and

3) In both analysis and composition, show knowledge of standard contrapuntal procedures such as imitation, inversion, tonal and real answer, subject and countersubject, and episode‹, as well as strategies of design.

Graduate Theory Review

The Full-Year Review class is designed for those students who need a firmer grounding in the basic elements of tonal music. The class begins with keys, scales, chords, line, voice leading and harmonization techniques, and diatonic harmony. Studies continue through chromatic aspects of tonal music including its processes and formal designs, into 20th-century techniques.
