Course Description:

Shakespeare:  Two history plays, two tragedies, one comedy, some sonnets.

Course Requirements:

You will usually be required to read and reflect carefully on the plays.  You should complete the reading assignments before you come to class; I will assume a basic familiarity with the assigned reading, including characters, plot, and consequences and you should be prepared to demonstrate this familiarity on cue.  Your active engagement with the material will account for 25% of your final grade.  You will share responsibility with your fellow students in encouraging and leading classroom discussion.  You will be required to complete two significant writing assignments:  a short paper and a final paper.  You will have a multiple-choice midterm exam and a final exam with an essay.  Papers will allow and encourage you to explore and analyze the implications of the reading and ideas we discuss over the course of the semester.

All written work must be printed, double-spaced, using standard margins and fonts. I value high quality writing; your grade will be reduced by 10% for errors of punctuation, spelling, grammar, or proofreading.  Please keep copies of all written work you submit.  You are responsible for submitting assignments on time, and Gina or I should be notified promptly if your work will be late.  Late work, when accepted, will be penalized.

Your grade will be calculated as follows:

                        Midterm paper                                      20%

                        Midterm exam (IDs)                            10%

                        Final paper                                            30%

                        Final exam (IDs)                                   15%
