Current Projects...
I am currently working on a book about the role of keyboard playing in German society in the early eighteenth century. My research is focused on J. S. Bach (1685-1750) and I seek to illuminate the role his music played in the lives of those who bought, sold, played, or heard it while the composer was still alive. I am also editing the ninth volume in the Bach Perspectives series (Illinois University Press, 1995-Present), entitled "Bach and His German Contemporaries," which will feature essays by leading scholars of baroque-era music. Finally, I will be editing a collection of excerpts from travel diaries written between 1700 and 1750 which feature the city of Leipzig. This last project is supported by a grant from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
