Stephen Thursby

Musicology

Stephen is currently Adjunct Instructor of Music at the University of Maryland and George Washington University. He received the Ph.D. in Musicology from Florida State University in 2009 with a dissertation on Gustav Mahler’s work with stage designer Alfred Roller at the Vienna Court Opera. He has published book reviews in Notes: Quarterly Journal of the Music Library Association, Shofar: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Jewish Studies, and online at H-Net Reviews, and has also written liner notes for the Naxos label. He has read papers at regional and national meetings of the American Musicological Society, at the national meeting of the Society for American Music, and at student conferences in the U.S. and Canada. In addition to the music and artistic ideas of Mahler and Wagner, his research interests include music and utopian thought in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, as well as fiddle traditions of Appalachia and the British Isles.
