Foreign Language

The Peabody Conservatory considers foreign language an important part of the education of professional musicians. The foreign languages offered are French, German, and Italian, languages essential to the study of music.

Most majors require two years of foreign language study, either two years of the same language, or one each of two languages. Placement examinations in French, German and Italian are given during Orientation Week. Policies regarding transfer and AP credits in languages may be found in the Student Handbook.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

All incoming international students at the Peabody Conservatory are interviewed and tested for English proficiency. Students whose English competency is inadequate for required academic course work will be placed in one of three ESL courses. These are described in the catalog. Placement in some ESL courses may prolong the student's program.
