Minister of Music - St. James' Episcopal Church

St. James’ Episcopal Church at Lafayette Square is a vibrant and inclusive urban congregation located in Baltimore’s Lafayette Square, with a long history as the first black Episcopal church south of the Mason/Dixon line and the third in the country. We are seeking qualified candidates for our Minister of Music position to plan and administer the church’s musical program. This is a contract position.
Responsibilities
- Oversee, in consultation with the Rector and lay leadership, all existing and future St. James’ music programs, including the Senior Choir, Expressions of Faith Gospel Choir, the St. James’ Youth Choir, and the Handbell Choir.
- Promote and expand the music program within the church, including working actively to increase membership and participation in existing choirs and engaging in the formation of a Men’s Choir.
- Play the organ, piano, and/or Hammond organ at all Sunday worship services and special services, on major feast days that may fall at any point during the week (such as Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Palm Sunday, Easter, Pentecost, and Holy Week), and on other Diosecan or community celebrations upon request of the Rector and mutually agreed upon by both parties.
- Rehearse and direct the Senior Choir to perform for one Sunday worship service most Sundays throughout the month
- Play for funeral and wedding services conducted at St. James’, whenever possible (and for additional compensation).
- Work with the Rector, Parish administrator, and other musical leadership as appropriate to select music for worship services.
- Organize and perform at least two concerts per year for the benefit of the church, with the financial proceeds to go towards church activities.
- Monitor the condition of the church’s musical instruments and make recommendations to the Rector regarding maintenance and upkeep.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in Music, and 3 years of musical experience or the equivalent
- Experience and demonstrated proficiency playing both the organ and piano, with experience with the Hammond organ a plus
- Strong knowledge of church organ and choral music, including familiarity with the African-American musical canon. (Familiarity with additional types of church music, particularly gospel, would be a plus.)
- Proven experience leading and working with choirs, with specific experience with church choirs being a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to work well with others, including church leadership, staff, musicians, and choir members, and the ability to be sensitive to – and adjust to – the worship needs of the congregation.
- Familiarity with the Episcopal liturgy would be a plus.
This is a contracted position, with salary starting in the low $20k range based on ability and experience, to be determined in negotiation with the church.

Paid Choral Positions Available

Shrine of the Little Flower is now holding auditions for Soprano, Alto, and Tenor singers. Little Flower Choir sings for the 11am Mass and other special services throughout the year with a Sunday morning call from 10am until 12:15pm. There are several mid-week rehearsals (normally Thursday evening) scheduled prior to major feasts such as Christmas and Easter. Repertoire includes the full range of Sacred Music from Gregorian chant and Renaissance Polyphony to modern compositions for chorus and organ. Sight reading skills are essential. Compensation is $45 for regular Sunday call.

Music Director - Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church

Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church is looking for a music director to lead an energetic, multi-generational congregation of 200 members. Sunday worship consists of a single 10:30 am service; music is a mix of traditional hymns and contemporary music. Instruments include a Zimmer Opus 446 pipe organ with 22 ranks, a baby grand piano and several digital keyboards.
Position is for an interim music director for a minimum period of 6 months from January to June 2013. Position may be extended on a month-to-month basis by mutual agreement, pending decision on hiring a permanent director, for which position the successful candidate is encouraged to apply.
Duties are to plan, prepare and play for regular Sunday services and scheduled special services, including SATB choir rehearsal once a week, Youth choir practice on an occasional basis, and staff meetings as necessary. Looking for strong keyboard skills with both organ and piano, experience in directing small choirs and good interpersonal/teamwork skills.
This is a 10-12 hour/week position. Salary is commensurate with experience and includes some vacation benefits, but no health insurance or pension.

Organist Needed

St. Thomas' Parish is a small (average Sunday attendance 100), diverse, progressive urban Episcopal parish in the heart of Dupont Circle in Washington, DC.
Beginning immediately, we are in need of part-time church musicians for 3-7 months to serve as organist for our main Sunday service at 11 a.m.; as pianist for our 5 p.m. Sunday Taize services; and ideally also to lead a small choir initially composed of 6-8 volunteers augmented by 4 paid professional section leaders.
