Workshop Descriptions

Music Learning Theory is a research-based theory about how we learn when we learn music. The morning session will cover how to sequence the teaching of rhythm skills and the afternoon session will address tonal skills. These skills aid students to learn to “think” in music as easily as they “think” in language. Participants will experience classroom activities that address movement, chanting, creating, improvising, reading, and writing.

Exploring the Orff Approach: Many music teachers find themselves at odds with a schedule; there is so much to teach, learn, and do that there never seems to be enough time to get it all accomplished. This “hands-on” workshop will emphasize routines, pedagogical strategies, and “kid-tested” materials as framed through an Orff Schulwerk approach that encourages students to make the most of their time in music class. Participants are encouraged to bring energy, enthusiasm, and dress appropriately for movement. Morning and Afternoon sessions will have different activities and content.

KBLAM: Discover the music in children's books and language! Children’s literature and poetry are rich resources for developing children’s music skills of singing, playing instruments, listening, and creating. In this workshop we'll focus on aiding children in grades 3 through 6 in using their music skills to tell stories as well as using children's literature to enhance music learning. These exciting all-new lessons maintain a music-learning focus while addressing the challenges of integrating the common core of English Language Arts.
