MM/MTP Credits

Elective Credits

  • Academic Electives: Ensembles and applied lessons do not satisfy this requirement. Electives are to be chosen in consultation with an advisor from the Music Theory Department. Independent study is encouraged. No more than three credits may be earned in electives that are not music courses. No more than three independent study credits may be applied to the degree.
  • Foreign languages: Foreign language study, especially German, is strongly encouraged. One foreign language course can be applied as a non-music elective. Foreign language courses can be taken on the Peabody campus or at the Homewood campus of The Johns Hopkins University.
  • Ensembles and lessons: While not expressly a part of the degree structure, students are strongly encouraged to participate in Peabody's vibrant musical community and to continue their own music making by taking lessons and participating in ensembles. Students taking private lessons will incur a supplemental studies fee.

Retroactive Peabody Credits

In rare cases, credit is granted retroactively for graduate courses completed at Peabody before the student enrolled in the MM-MTP, provided that the credits have not been applied toward another Peabody degree. A student must petition the Chair of the Music Theory Department and clearly demonstrate that the course did not apply to another degree earned at Peabody. The student must also include a transcript, a description of the course, and a liberal selection of coursework including large papers and/or projects. Retroactive credit will be considered only for courses in which the petitioning student earned grades of "B" or higher.

A maximum of six retroactive credits may be applied to the MM-MTP, provided the courses were taken within five years of the start of the current program at Peabody.

Undergraduates at the Peabody Conservatory may elect to take a graduate Music Theory elective and set aside the credits for application to the MM-MTP. Students may take such an elective after completing the required three years of undergraduate Music Theory courses. Interested students should discuss this option with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.

Transfer credits from other institutions

The Music Theory Department, with sole discretion, decides if a student may apply credits earned at another institution toward the MM-MTP. To request consideration, a student must petition the Chair of the Music Theory Department and provide supporting documentation, including a transcript, a description of the course, and a liberal selection of course work, including large papers and/or projects. Petitions should be made in the first semester of study.
